    Whats a good battery?

I'll need a new battery in my car sooner than I thought, any suggestions as to what is a good brand, CCA minimum etc for a relatively easy to obtain battery? It's a P38A 4.0 Cheers, Phil.

I'm using a calcium battery in mine. Are they good? Dunno. I've had the car 6 years and am on my second replacement battery. (The original battery was replaced a few months after buying the car.)

Re the size and brand, I'll have to pull the battery cover off to find out. The first was a Delkor, this one was from the same supplier but I think it has a different brand name.

Hi Ron - thanks but don't go to any trouble - the dealer has just fitted a biggest sealed battery he could get (?), the price $167 is all I know about it. It'll last a few years anyway, I hope.

Priced an Optima Yellow Top, the D34A is $430. Expensive, but rangerovers.net say it's pretty good.

I thought the calcium batteries were for the later cars with the different, higher voltage alternators .

Factory fit have lead acid up to 1998 & calcium from 1999.

Could be. Maybe that's why they aren't lasting.

Thanks Scott. Now to investigate further.

I also put a calcium in my daughter's '95 D1. It's what the local LR specialists are supplying to their customers. I wonder if that's wrong.

That's the info we were told when the XA RR & DII came out.

Fitting a calcuim into an earlier car would mean that the battery never gets fully charged.
Fitting a lead acid into a later car means that the battery is overcharging.

I have seen evidence of the 2nd scenario & the resulting damage when the battery has boiled over for a while.

I'm running 2nd hand calciums in my Morris Minors but they don't have to work too hard anyway .

Until recently there was only one major battery manufacturer left in Australia, in Wacol, Brisbane. They made batteries for all and sundry and put all the different brand stickers on. There is now another major plant in Adelaide, I believe. There are probably a few small local battery shops that still assemble their own but they are a dying breed.
