Question momentary polarity reversal 2001 P38

Just had an urgent call from a mate in holidaying Northern NSW. His alternator died so he pulled out the brush set to find that the brushes were very short & sticking in their holder. Fixed that - temporarily - BUT.... when he reconnected everything back up he momentarily reversed the polarity & got a bit of an arc.

Everything seems to work except he can't reset the left front window and the drivers seat has lost it's memory.

His question is: Is he likely to have damaged the control module (computer) or is there some trick he can try to reset these?

    The vehicle: P38 2001 4.6 HSE

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Gandalph.
You are really asking "how long is a piece of string".
I'm surprised that someone with knowledge of the p38a BECM hasn't replied so perhaps 'bumping' this post will bring it to their attention.
My experience is limited to what I have experienced with my own vehicle and for what it's worth I'll pass it on.
The BECM (body electronic control module ) never goes completely to sleep whenever a battery is connected. So it's possible that some damage has been done. Even after the battery has been disconnected it is possible to have activity 20-30 minutes later. (detailed explanation not needed at this time ! )
If it were my vehicle I would do the following:
Work out if the two items you mentioned are the only problems...check everything including engine and gearbox performance. If these items are all that is wrong then they are more likely to be the result of low battery voltage and might self cure after a decent run. If there are other problems in addition to the above then it is possible that the BECM needs a hard reset.
However do NOT attempt this out in the field as you may find that if it has been damaged it does not properly re-boot.
My advice is to leave well enough alone if the seat and the window are the only problem and wait until you have access to a Land Rover person with the full diagnostic equipment.
    Good luck !

    Red face Fixed.

    Thanks Ivery,

Received a call from mate with the P38. He said that after a quiet night resting in the motel carpark his RR has cured itself!

Makes these beasts seem even more human when they can throw a tantrum but be over it in the morning......

    Thanks for your response

The most likely damage is a diode in the alternator.
Son Gen Y tried to jump start his M3.
Connected the neg of the donor car to his pos in the BMW , because the BMW pos was black not red. Cost him an alternator. Geeesh.
