Hi Remy,
To remove the shim just undo the centre bolt on the clutch pulley, the shim is behind that. It will probably not fall out as magnets will hold it in place.
I actually tried running my aircon without the shim, but the clutch would never disengage! ie: It ran always whether the ac was switched on or not. So my recommendation would be to put a smaller shim in, instead.
I would also question whether the shim is indeed the culprit, its strange that when your aircon heats up it switches off. This doesnt seem to indicate a clutch problem.
The AC on the P38 is a complex system, I have had all sorts of problems with the beast. However, when I replaced both pressure switches, a lot of my problems dissapeared. My best guess is your pressure switches are the culprit.
