Compressor Clutch Failure - Ron B.

    Hey Ron or others,

Can you give me some advice on doing this (removing the shim) as the picture on rover.net doesn't show me much. I was going to buy a used compressor but from talking to Ward at Graeme Coopers suggested that might be worth checking to see if the shim is out and doing this first. Unfortunately it was to late in the day to get more info. Aircon runs fine, has gas and runs until it heats up then the clutch disengages.

P.S. Gas injection in and Haltech installed dual mapped for LPG and petrol. Bloody brilliant on petrol but i reckon some improvement can still be made on the on gas. 97Kw for both! The gas map (fuelling side) isn't touched by Ward only the gas ignition timing and looks a little odd the way the gas is fed in (not smooth). I will post graphs later when i get to a scanner. All that said very happy.

"Compressor Clutch Failure:Another common A/C problem is insufficient voltage to the magnetic compressor clutch; as the disk and pulley gap increases with wear the available magnetic flux has to bridge a larger gap. There is an official Land Rover fix for this in the shape of an additional wiring harness which dedicates a new circuit, with its own relay (relay #10 in the engine fusebox), to the magnetic clutch. A quick fix short of this official repair was devised by Andrew Parker. He found you can remove the shim washer from behind the disk and flexure plate (see picture at right by Ron Beckett) to reduce the gap. The shim washer fits to the centre boss of the plate. I have heard from several people who have had good success with this technique."

    Hi Remy,

To remove the shim just undo the centre bolt on the clutch pulley, the shim is behind that. It will probably not fall out as magnets will hold it in place.

I actually tried running my aircon without the shim, but the clutch would never disengage! ie: It ran always whether the ac was switched on or not. So my recommendation would be to put a smaller shim in, instead.

I would also question whether the shim is indeed the culprit, its strange that when your aircon heats up it switches off. This doesnt seem to indicate a clutch problem.

The AC on the P38 is a complex system, I have had all sorts of problems with the beast. However, when I replaced both pressure switches, a lot of my problems dissapeared. My best guess is your pressure switches are the culprit.

Hi Remy, It's been years since I removed the shim. I can't remember exactly how I got it out.

Does your fuse box have RL10 fitted? If not, then I highly recommend the aircon link harness kit be fitted (for early models).

I can't give you a link to a thead on rangerovers.net as the forum is down.
