I need another key for my P38

    g'day guys,

when I bought my P38 from auction it came with only 1 key, so I need another. but the dealer wants $400 + for one! Are there any other options?

well that's really a good price believe it or not, the keys are made to vin, they are programed in the UK, we can't program the keys, i dont no why but you just can't, an you can't just buy blank key,(not cut), the keys are not cheap, not to long ago they were around $1000 per key, so if that is a real land rover key from a LR dealer thats a good price,

you can but keys that don't have the central locking on them, there just a key like a defender key, no remote, that could be a cheaper way,

Before you go spending money on a new remote, make sure it hasn't had a lockset change in the past.
If it's had a change, then you're stuffed if the repairing dealer didn't record the barcodes. Just ask Ron how stuffed if you like.

    G'day Scott,

How do you check that out? Or is this a question for Ron?

I wouldn't know who the repairing dealer was, and having bought the car at auction really have no way of finding out. I don't have a record of who the previous owner was to check.

I had a plain key cut by a local locksmith. It's fine for most applications providing the car doesn't get immobilised).

My lockset was changed by the large dealer in Artarmon, Sydney but they didn't update the LR database with the new lockset code.

I ordered a new key from the VIN. It was wrong and wouldn't fit.

I wrote to Land Rover to complain about this practice and the bloke on the LR Customer Care (!?) line said they couldn't do anything as (quote) "they couldn't interfere in the way a dealer runs his business!" What? The dealer doesn't update his records and that's not a problem for LR - it sure is for the car owner!

So to buy yet another keyfob will cost me abut $1500 as I will have to buy yet another lockset, have it fitted, and have the BECM reprogrammed.
