    Door lock issues 99 P38a

    G'day guys,

99 P38a 4.0S I am having some problems with the door lock mechanism. Sometimes as I drive along the central locking mechanism fires off - no it isn't me leaning on the button inadvertently! Also, the LHS front door lock doesn't always lock with the central locking.

Any ideas/ experience/ comments? I'd appreciate your help.

I dont know what your problem is, but the p38s do not have solonoids like the classics and S1 discos. The locking motor is built into the door catch, and is a sealed unit similar to a D2. If these are the problem, let me know i have a few spares.

    G'day Andy,

Thanks for this info. Perhaps we can talk about it when I'm in Sydney on 15 January?

Thanks, Philip. I had forgotten about RangeRovers.net! I have had a good read of the relevant sections - and a lot more besides! Very helpful.

    Thanks,

    Hi Willem,
did you work out what it was? My 99 has exactly the same problem, seems to be more so when it is hot outside. I've left it as is at the moment, I'm thinking it may be the BECM or dirty ground wire?

    cheers,
    Ren

    G'day Ren,

No I haven't worked it out as yet. Life just gets too busy! Currently I'm building a dickie seat frame to mount the dickie seats I've got so that the whole family can come along, and then I've just bought a Smartbar bullbar that needs modifying so that it works properly and I need to get the airbag compatibility issues resolved. And I have some new shockies I want to fit. And ...

So the door lock issue has taken a back seat. I think you're in the right area, though. A dirty, or loose, earth wire may well be the kind of thing that causes this. We have found that it happens a lot less when the doors are locked, so we travel with the doors locked. Otherwise the locks firing off every couple of minutes drives you nuts.

But I have spent a few days away with my wife - on our 35th honeymoon! - and we took the Rangie up some pretty rough tracks behind Lorne. It showed us just how competent a vehicle the P38 Rangie is! Tackled large washaways, ruts, muddy sections along the Thompsons Track with ease. Both of us are impressed.

But I'll get to the door lock issue. One day!

    hi mate,
sounds good, I've done some paddock driving with mine but nothing that 'off road' as yet. I've got to tackle the overheating issue!! Looks like you'll be busy too. I'm going to run a new bigger ground to the battery, I'll let you know if that helps with the locks.

    cheers,
    Ren
