    99 P38a ABS relay

    G'day guys,

I just went to buy a replacement ABS relay for my P38a, and the aftermarket relay that was suggested is the Narva 68000 which is a 40 A relay. It appears to be identical with the original Siemens R6KO ABS relay, except that the 86 terminal is considerably narrower on the original Siemens relay. The question is are these the same relay with just different contacts or are they actually different relays?

Its pretty important that I get this right given that its for the braking system, but there is a price difference by a factor of 10! ($12 for the aftermarket version; $127 for the genuine!). If it is the same relay with Land-Rover just playing silly buggers to make you buy genuine, then I will file down the contact. If there is actually a significant difference then I will have to hit my long suffering credit card again!

Is there anyone who can shed some light on this? Perhaps Scouse you might have some inside info?

    Thanks,

    Willem

Do a cross reference on the Siemens number or LR part number on the net. Also check to see if the Genuine relay has the switch diagram on it and compare it to other relays available.

Although some may look the same, in a lot of cases they aren't based on diode inputs, NO or NC contacts, coil protection diodes and resistors etc.

    Cheers Andrew.

There's a couple of ABS relays in the P38.

    ABS - power relay:
The genuine part number is YWB10012L. Dealer price approx $25-30.

That same number is also listed as a relay for several other items too:
    Starter
    HEVAC
    Fuel pump
    EAS
    A/C
    Heated screen

Therefore, it's just a generic relay IMO. It's listed as a 'normally open, non changeover relay'. The genuine one is yellow. The green relays are changeover types.
As long as the pins have the same numbers/layout, you're OK. You could also just swap one relay over to test yours.

    Relay - ABS pump:
This one is PRC9566, about $140-150.

I suspect this is the one you need. Looking at the ETM though, it doesn't stand out as being an unusual relay. It's looked after by a 40A fuse so it's not controlling massive current. Pin numbers are 30, 85, 86, 87.

I'm not too sure if it helps but it's all I know.

    G'day Scott,

You're right, it is the ABS pump relay I need. And I agree from the little diagram found on the relay cover it looks the same. But why would Land-Rover make one leg of it tiny? Is it just silly buggers or is there a real difference? The price difference is pretty massive!

But I think I will take your advice and just try it. It will mean taking the new aftermarket relay and filing down the pin to fit the slot. I'll let you know how it goes.

    Thanks for your help.

Willem, take a couple of photos of the relay and post them up here.

If it shows the pin outs, I have a relay book here I can maybe find something that will do it.

Scouse, all relays have pins 30,85,86 & 87. Its how they are configured that makes the difference.
Where relays are powered by an ECU, pin 86 will have a diode into it to stop any back feed or surge into the ECU. Put the wrong one in and a surge or power glitch can blow the output on the ECU. I just had this happen with my fuel pump relay and the end result was that the relay arced out, flashed over the coil pins and shorted out the fuel pump windings. Any normal relay would have fried my ECU with it. I tested it with a resisitor protected coil from my spotlights and it failed to switch!

    Cheers
