There are a few different radio fitted depending on model/year.
1995-1999ish SE & HSE had the Clarion unit.
Base 4.0 in about 1999/2000 came with a local Eurovox unit.
Post 1999 had an Alpine.
Greetings all , have finally bought my p38 home after a couple of weeks at the mechanic getting a " blue slip " Next item is to fit the CB I thought the little cubby hole next to the clock would be ideal ?? Any other thoughts or suggestions ??? One other question is that the previous owner decided to keep the cd cassette , any ideas on what type it is or local source ???
Rgrds and thanks

I have a CB with a removable head unit. The main unit is fitted behind the panel behind the RH rear seat and the head unit is double-sided taped to the area below the dash cubby hole.

Fun... when I went to get the Blue Slip for my current P38A the mechanic wanted an engineers cert for the air suspension
Not a lot of space behind the tray next to the clock. I Know as I've had that panel off recently. Here's a pic to give you an idea:
I went for a GME TX3440 CB/UHF radio as the body is hidden inside the dash and the controls are on the handset. When I want to hide it, I just drop the handset to the floor out of sight...
Honestly, it's not worth trying to get an original head unit any more. For less than $300 you can get a CD/MP3 unit with iPod connection that will wire in easily and probably sound better than the original using the existing speakers.
I recently changed over the head unit on my wife's Freelander to such a unit here Replacing the Stereo Head Unit PaulP38A.com - not too different on a P38A.
While I'm putting my P38A back together over the weekend, I'm also swapping the JVC DVD/iPod unit shown in the pics above over to an "eBay special" that cost $500 and has:
- 7" touch screen
- GPS
- CD/DVD
- TV
- SD/USB and iPod playback
- bluetooth handsfree
Who needs a CD stacker that doesn't read track info?
I'll post up the wiring info in the next couple of days.
cheers, Paul.

Installed the "eBay special" today and made a note of the wiring (car side) for you folks...
Speakers:
Front Left = Green + Green/Black
Front Right = White + White/Black
Rear Left = Blue + Blue/Black
Rear Right = Yellow + Yellow/Black
Others:
Dimmer = Orange
Ground = Black
Accessory = Red
Battery = Pink
No idea what Grey does
Also, I'm not 100% about the pink and red now that the "eBay special" doesn't seem to be holding memory (changing back to GMT+8) properly.
This is how the unit it looks in the dash
Cheers, Paul.

Nice one Paul, looks like it's got the goods. What's the brand/model?
I have the The GME TX3440 UHF, like the system that Paul has.
It is excellent because you can conceal the main unit and remove the microfone for security when you are not in the vehicle.
If you shop arounf you can get a promotion packae that come with a portable 3 wat unit as well![]()
dunno if this link will work...
7" 1 Din CAR DVD GPS TV TOUCH SCREEN RDS iPOD CONTROL - eBay Players, Audio, Video, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 24-Sep-09 21:49:04 AEST)
It's a no-name Chinese unit. The good bits:
- iGo GPS software is very good
- DVD playback is good
- can't fault overall sound quality for iPod, MP3, CD Audio and radio
- touch screen works well with stubby fingers
- automatically switches to reversing camera
the frustrating bits:
- won't multitask... can't have GPS in foreground while listening to radio or iPod
- GPS run on top of Windows CE 5, while other functions appear to be some proprietary operating system
- doesn't charge the iPod
- analogue TV aerial is pretty average - reception sucks (by comparision, the Clarion TV in my previous P38A had great reception)
- can't find a way of customising the menu to remove things I don't want
- slow to boot up on car start (10-30secs depending on last function selected)
However, for $500 it is pretty good, even just for the GPS. I'll stick with it for a while until I get sick of it or find something else.
Cheers, Paul.
