    Hi Ray - welcome to the site.

    As Fraser asks, please tell us where you are in Oz as this can sometimes help us to make better suggestions for assistance.

    There is a great wealth of info on EAS problems and diagnosis here and over at http://rangerovers.net

    A quick check to see whether you have a leak or if it is an ECU issue is to leave a door open overnight (this stops self levelling) and see if it drops. If you can't leave a door open (e.g. parked out on the street) remove the EAS inhibitor relay under the passenger seat.

    At each wheel, measure the distance between the bottom of the wheel rim (not the tyre) and the bottom of the wheel arch. This will give you a known distance that is independent of tyre size and pressure, and measure it again in the morning.

    Try it again over a few nights at different ride heights to see if it makes a difference. What you are checking here is if there is a slow leak in the air bags themselves due to craks in the rubber or poor seals.

    Checking for leaks in the air lines is easy enough to do with a spray bottle of soapy water.

    If this all checks out ok, it is likely to be a leaking solenoid or some other problem in the EAS valve block. Not necessarily an expensive fix as replacing the o-rings is pretty simple. I've documented my attempt at EAS Valve Block Renew PaulP38A.com

    A lot of people are afraid/wary of the EAS. Don't be - it's not too complicated really... just do a bit of reading about it, take some reasonable precautions and you'll never want to ride in a coil-sprung vehicle again

    Cheers, Paul.

    Hi Paul- Thanks for your reply sorry its taken so long to get back to you --having problems with my log on to this site,
    Ok -- will try what you have suggested ,as for the air bags these i think have all been replaced resently, why would the back go down front stay up ,then after a while driving it would level out to a normal drive position ,stay that way for about 2 days then all happen again,as you can see i dont know much about these cars i need all the help i can get espesialy when there was no manual with the car ,
    Paul on the dash of the car there is a switch with 4 lights and on the right hand side of the switch a buton with a little red line what does all that mean ,-- please send thanks to Frazer for his response -- I am in Sydney cheers Ray

    Hi Ray,

    Have had a few EAS issues myself recently and managed to rectify by making up an OBD II cable and using with the software from the legends at Welcome to RSW Solutions

    I'm by no means qualified in the area but if your anywhere near the Shire south Sydney, feel free to drop round and I can at least plug in and check/clear the faults for you.

    Hi Ray,

    I'm cautious to give any black and white answers on this but from my personal experience - yes. The site describes the functions of the EAS software i've downloaded here;

    Range Rover P38a - EAS Unlock Suite

    I've got the setup in my car today, currently at Surry Hills, returning home to the Shire around 9pm and back in tomorrow around 6.30 - 7am.

    David is right - it does clear the lights and sets everything back to normal. I have the cables and the software set up on my laptop and have used it a couple of times.

    Paul's advice about checking for leaks is the place to start. I went for months with niggling problems and then decided that I really needed to replace the rear air springs like Andy had said I should back in January and that solved most of the problems. There are still a few to sort out, but that's part of the price you pay for getting a 90% discount on the new price of the car! A bit of persistence and a willingness to learn gets you a long way.

    Back down, front up (and reversed) might be caused by internal leaks in the valve block and solenoids, worn height sensors (potentiometers), or even self levelling of the car when parked on a slope (it is more common for the car to work itself down to the bump stops in this case though).

    You can get a soft-copy of the owners manual and workshope manuals by purchasing a Rave CD. If you buy it from here the proceeds go towards supporting this site. Well worth the $16.50 investment.

    If you want a hard-copy of an Owners Manual, "andrew e" on this forum may be able to help as he regularly breaks P38A's and sells off the parts on eBay.

    Now for those pesky switches on the centre fascia panel... refer to the pic below:

    there are 8 slots/switches plus the light dial on the right. From left to right:
    1 = blank, used for high/low range on manual vehicles (I think)
    2 = cruise control inhibitor (enable/disable)
    3 = hazard lights
    4 = EAS up/down toggle
    5 = EAS height indicator panel
    6 = EAS inhibitor/manual
    7 = front fog lamps
    8 = rear for lamps

    The EAS height indicator (5) tells you where the height is at (solid light) or where it is trying to go (flashing light).

    You can manually control the height by engaging the EAS inhibit/manual switch (depressed/light on) and selecting the desired height:

    • High/wading (highest user selectable height)
    • Normal
    • Low/Highway
    • Access (for loading/unloading stuff, and crawling in low car parks)

    There is another higher setting that raise the vehicle about 25mm (I think) if it detects the chassis has bottomed out on an obstruction.

    On EAS manual mode, if you have selected High and your road speed goes above approx 55Km/h it will automatically lower to Normal height. If you have selected Access while stopped, and start to move it will automatically raise to Low. You can also select Access before stopping (up to 30 secs?) but it will not lower until you stop and take your foot off the brake. I can't remember how to engage "Crawl" mode at the moment.

    If you leave the EAS inhibit/manual switch off (light off) it will decide for you...
    most of the time you will be at Normal height unless you speed goes above 80Km/h then it will lower to Low/Highway height. When your speed drops below 60Km/h for approx 30secs it will go back to Normal height... or something like that anyway.

    Important note: if a door or tailgate is open, or your foot is on the brake pedal - the car will not change height. This is a safety feature.

    If the EAS compressor cannot reach the desired height in about 5 minutes, you may get an "EAS FAULT" alert in the message area. This is where you need a tool to reset the fault. As others have suggested, download Storey Wilson's EASunlock software from Range Rover P38a - EAS Unlock Suite
    and get instructions for making up the OBD cable from P38a EAS Unlock Videos or buy one from Storey at Range Rover P38a - EAS Cable

    If you can't wait for the cable to arrive from the US, you can buy the parts at Jay Car and all you will need is a laptop with a serial port or "USB to Serial" adapter (also from Jay Car).

    I'm sure that once you've used the software and saved yourself a small fortune on mechanic's bills, it won't take much convincing to make a small donation to Storey Wilson for his great bit of software

    Cheers, Paul.
