    Living in a Landy

Well here we go, time to show you guys what I've been doing to my 85 Isuzu county.

Myself and my girlfriend Sarah are planning to travel around Australia on a budget. I first met Sarah when I was traveling in cambodia over two years ago, she's a Melbourne girl and I grew up at the base of the mountains outside Sydney. We fell in love over a shared dream to travel around Australia. Sare is more the hippy type and had wanted to do it in a Kombie. I'm more the shooting fishing type and already owned my Landy so I convinced her this was the vehicle in which to live out our dream.

Sarah has since fell totally in love with landrovers of all shapes and sizes and loves the 'landy wave' when ever we pass one.

So the time has come after much hard work and saving to sleep in the back of our 110/county for a year. We leave for our initial test run at easter where we will travel to Sarahs uncle's cattle station at Coonamble for a famliy get together and Gyrocopter flying weekend then on to Lake Eyre and back to Sydney. Any problems with the outfit will be sorted before we head north and beyond for our journey. I'm running short on time for the biuld, Luckily i have quit work so have all day every day to work on the truck!

Things I have already done :

    Installed New streering box
New set of Bilsteins all round
Heavy duty lovells springs to carry extra load
Had right through new Stainless exhaust with heat wrap under fire wall
Dual battery installed under drivers seat solar panel connected
    slide out for engle fridge
Bitumen sound deadening and new marine carpet complete front cab
    Removed headlining
    New front drivers door trim
    new kenwood stereo
    Timber rear gate trim
    under bed storage started
    Rifle Box complete
    slide out for kitchenette started

    Things to complete:

    Fit bonnet wheel mount
    Fit jerry can holders
    Fit water tank
make and fit ladder to the rack
Fit "gul wing" to rear drivers side
    fit 2.5m roll out awning
    wire up spot lights
    fit diff bash guards
Bushes!!!! Any that need replacing will be done
And finish bed kitchen and over head storage.

    Things for the mechanic.

Rear main seal and inspection of the LT95
Also is it worth shecking valve clearances etc?
What would you guys suggest I check on an Isuzu before a big haul?
She never misses a beat and I give her fresh Oil and filters ever 5,000.

I will post pictures though this will not be a detailed tutorial. I can try answer any questions you throw my way. Though don't ask mechanical questions, I'm still very much a novice grease monkey but am always hungry to learn.

    Cheers Garth

    Rear timber work

I have started the box work in the back, our bed will be at winow height, awfully cramped if not fitting the Gull wing window panel, raised bed will be maximising under bed stowage. I am using 12 mm ply, it is heavy but it was the thinnest with the structural integrity to accommodate two light adults sleeping on it.

Nice work, and thanks for sharing it with us.

Often seen the bed at the height of the rear wheel boxes (abt 9" up from the floor) with storage under that (rear & side) - it will be interesting to hear how you find the restricted headroom with the bed higher than that (don't forget to add the mattress height - and it will be a bit of a climb).

Certainly get the valve clearances checked - if too great it can restrict power somewhat.

FWIW I am of the opinion that bush replacement is best done by a LR mechanic with a 10+ton press - particularly if that "A" frame balljoint needs replacement - budget around $!k for labour & gen parts if a workshop does the whole lot - but it certainly improves handling and comfort and the job will last another 200000+km

Otherwise you could see if it heats up too much on a long uphill run and if so, have the radiator rodded (abt $100) and replace the thermostat & gasket (also about $100) - otherwise carry them + hoses + belts as spares. One of the low coolant warning kits as advertised on here could be useful. If there's no other obvious problems that's about it - I'll be surprised if others do not have additional advice.

Yeah that's where we had our old bed. it was wonderful and roomy but space was an issue and since we are putting the slide out fridge behind the drivers seat we opted for the raised bed height. The climb is not a problem (when sober) as we are both young fit and nimble though lack of head room is a bitch but we will more than likely sleep under our awning in the mozzie net a lot.

Thank you all in advance for your tips my main concern is to make my 110 as reliable as possible and all advice is welcome.

bit of a tidy up, we will have the stove on a pull out at the back so this will be easier to clean also. I got rid of the rear wiper and washer, the wiring had been chopped in the dash years ago so it was just weight bolted to the truck.

The fridge slide. I got some very good quality draw slides and mounted them flat on their back on a piece of ply. I ran 5/8 bolts through the runners, ply and floor of the landy, the ply not only gives added strength, it gives clearance to slide out over the door rubber. Mounting the runners on their back reduces their load capacity somewhat though they don't need to be pulled to full extension to get the fridge out so will do just fine.

Nice work, I was going to do something like your idea but to be able to converting the 110 back to standard when not travelling.
After finding out that if I removed the seats I have to change the compliance plate as well I just stoped the project.

Are you for real? Mine was a nine seater though I had it blue slipped for five. I would not think you'd have to change anything unless you are going to ADD seats or seat belts. whos gonna care if you take seats out? It's putting them in unregulated that some one is gonna kick a stink about.

This may cause me some great deal of issue as I will need to rego it in another state as I'm traveling. Now that I think of it, how can you rego a five seater if the rear seats and restraints aren't there? oh well another hurdle to jump when I get to it!
