So whilst pulling out the bigger roller bearings to grease them up, I rotated the shaft a little and a small ball bearing has come out.
So I guess I will be pulling it down even more to see what the ball bearing (48 on exploded diagram) looks like. It's a bit annoying, I was close to getting it back together.

No I am not sure about much at all to be honest! Thanks for the pointer. The ball that came out was quite small.
I think disassembly is probably a good idea anyway, despite I have already spent the dosh. I am keen to learn on things as I go. I bought some circlip pliers today, I didnt even know they existed 3 months ago!

And where I think the item came out... See the spring slightly protruding? Don't know how the bugger got out, but I will try to squeeze it back in

The ball has come out under of where the selector yoke(?) goes over the main gear inside.
I will try again with the image.

Just to the right of the yoke is where a spring emerged and popped a ball out.

Yes Sam, it's one of the 3 synchroniser balls. the output gear must have moved forward a whisker when you withdrew the input shaft.There is a floating pad that the spring sits in that you can move slighly to the right to help you pop the ball back in, or You may need to push the output gear away a few thou to slide the shift collar to the left slightly to get the ball back in, taking care that the other 2 don't pop out.

Righto, all three small balls have popped out at one stage or another, but are back in now.
I just want to run the reassembly of unit by here to ensure it's correct. I am putting it back together how it initially came apart, but seems to deviate from an exploded view I have been referencing.
So, I will start at the gear end of the mainshaft.
The thicker washer is at the far end, the thrust bearing is between it and a thinner washer.
Then, on the middle of the shaft, a big spacer is in between two roller bearings.
Near the big ball bearing, a smaller roller bearing is surrounded by two spacers.
And then finally, one more thrust bearing has a spacer on the outside (next to the circlip) and two on the inside.
Any alarm bells here?
Also, should I be greasing the the bearings or just letting the oil do its job?
