Hi Nick, I can't remember if it was in D or N to remove the switch, but basically it was in a position that allowed easy disengagement. You can fine tune the positioning while it's in by loosening the screws that mount the switch and twisting the switch on the spline.
Sorry to be such a dunce but where is the switch located?
Near side (passenger) on transmission between exhaust down pipe and transmission.

Hi this is my first post on AULRO
I was looking for info on the M&S flashing lights on my 2001 TD5 auto looked a simple worthwhile fix all went well and no more flashing warning lights great.
When I opened the switch there was a different set up for the inside the switch was marked with a 2004 casting date so might have been fitted by a previous owner I'm number 4.
The inside has a wing shaped centre with two sets of four contacts on either side it looks much simpler then the older model in the first few pictures in thread less moving parts still gets wet though

Played around with releasing the plug assembly from the transmission, maybe my hands are too big or I don't have enough elbows but this was a turd of a job. Happy to know if there any tricks that will make this easier.

Yes, the plug assembly is hard to reach because of where they secured the harness in place. I used a flat blade screwdriver to depress a small plastic clip and slip the entire plug off of the small metal tab that secures the harness to the transmission. Once it was loose from it's mounting tab I was able to slide the harness down and use the screwdriver to depress the small tab on the plug that releases the 2 parts (my fingers were kind of big to push that tab). After securley attaching the replacement switch I worked it back up along the transmission and slit it back on to the metal tab and it clicked securely into place. Then you can slide the switch assembly back on to the transmission and bolt it back in place.
One other tip, when you remove the old switch be sure to match the position of the rotating splined hole in the center of the switch to match the one you removed; I placed the new one over the old one with both housings aligned and then turned the splined part to match the old switch. The shaft and corrosponding hole in the switch have a flat side so they can only mate in one position. By pre-aligning the position of the new switch you should get the housing of the replacement switch pretty close to the same position as the one you took off. You should only have to fine tune it afterward to be in the correct position that lights the red lights along the shift console and give you the correct gear symbol next to the odometer. If you are really out of alignment the tranny may not go into the selected gear.

The wheel location is important for refitting so index prior to removal.
The fault with my switch was that N wasn't working but all other gears were. This did cause intermittent M&S limp mode trips. After I opened the switch, it was clear the plastic on the wheel had worn in one spot preventing N from reading properly even though all other gears were working.
I replaced the switch with a second hand unit and there have been no further problems.
