Project Sparks
Hi all,
Im going to be doing a bit of work to my 1995 D1 and decided to post up what I do
So to start off I have a 1995 D1 300tdi. Here is a photo of her as it looks at the moment.
IMG_2174.jpg
So it's going to be setup for touring and camping but it is also my daily driver.
I have already put on a ARB bar Spotties and a UHF. Essential equipnment AFAIC if you live up in the pilbara
and it has a 2inch EFS suspension lift running 225/75/16.
im going to go with either 33" 10.5" or 285/75/16 Depending on what rim size I go for. This means that im going to change diff ratio and get ofset rims to cater for the larger rims.
whith that im going to rebuild swivel hubs and upgrade c/v's and replace the front brakes and discs to vented rotors and defender brakes. im also replacing the rear discs as these are bad at the moment as well.
in the rear im just doing a rotocuplink change to uni to get rid of that crap rubber POS as with the lift I have chewed through 1 already. I cant afford difflockers yet but this might be on the cards when funds allow.
The interior will get a tidy up and some rear draws will be put in to help store some stuff and a fridge slide to help with getting out the cold ones after a long drive.
Im going to have a crack putting everything on myself (with some help of some fitter work mates) this will make it more personal and will be good experience for if i have a breakdown in the bush.
Im planing on doing the gib river road with the missus and 2 little ones in a year and a half's time so I want to get it done for then.
Anyway feel free to post comments and susgestions as we go along.

Go for it Sparks, A year on and I'm still slowly slotting mine together. Nearly there but the closer I get the longer it seems to take and like you I'm doing as much as I can myself, YES it is very rewarding taking it out on the tracks and thinking to yourself "I made this capable of doing this"
I'm subscribing i want to see how this works out for you.

So last night I sat down with my fitter workmate Wazza and went through the rve cd on setting up the diffs.

After numerous jibes like
"geez what's with all the Landrover special tools"

and "Why don't ya just buy a Toyota and get on with it"

We set out a plan of attack.
Wazza being a wiz on the lathe turned me up some blanks to help with pressing on the bearings and he also machined me up a pinion height setting block to 39.50mm as per the rave CD.

It's nice having a fitter at your disposal

Also Rovercare is kindly sending me some pinion height and preload shims so thanks for that.

Today is my first day off from night shift so I'm still a little tired so I might not do to mush today.
I might start by putting in the Aldi winch I got. Because my truck has ABS the winch has to sit in a cradle that bolts between the chassis rails. So today I might get under and do a bit of tidying up of a bit of rust around the bar and mount up the winch and cradle.

Has anyone with a auto fitted an ARB cradle? Looks like the auto hoses that go from the cooler to the tranny might be in the way? But I’ll se when I mount it up if there is a problem,
Anyway that's all for today.
Stay tuned for the next posts

Ok so i got the winch in but not happy with it.

it sits down very low and i also forgot to rotate the gear box section so the selector sits down real low

. Will post photos when i pull the winch back off again and rotate it around again.
Anyway im preping upto remove the centers of my diff on wednesday and have some questions.
1 The centralising peg thingy that sits over the pinion nut on the rear flange. What size and thread is it and is it left hand thread? I'm going to make up a puller to get it off so need to know.
2. what size nut is the pinion nut?
3. im going to be putting on a uni joint instead of the rubber couplink. I have a flange kit and the crown and pinion are from ashcroft. i think there is talk of using a spacer to make it fit properly? is that correct or am I thinking somthing different
anyway any help will be appreaciated
Cheers

Ok it's been a while but have done a bit. Diff's are done tires and rims are on and winch is on.
A few Dramas have now emerged.
1. Front diff has a bit of a whine

. it only happens when you are going at about 70 to 80 KMH if your less or more than it's fine????
2.tyres are great I got the km goodridge muddys in 285/75/16. These are fitted to -25 offset rims. Turning circle is fine and it dose not rub.
but turning and going over bumps are another story

it was rubbing on the bull bar to start with. I pulled the bull bar as far foward as it could go and as high as it would go. seems ok now. but it still rubs on the body if you take it off the road. My front springs are only soft but are a 2" lift but putting the winch on there you can tell it is saging a bit. I would get heavy spring for the front but i figure if i came across a washout and wasnot paying to much attention then i would still crash into the bumpstop and end up punching the tyres into the body with fairly bad results

So getting back to it I dont want to get a body lift as i want to keep the airbag. If i get the long travel suppension kit it comes with extended bump stops. do you think it would be ok with this as the bump stop clearence is more meaning more room between wheel and body, and being a long travel kit then i will not lose suspension travel?
The back rubs a little bit but i can fix this by chopping a bit more as it is just rubbing on the flare.
Any way ill post some pictures when i can. All i can say is it looks awesome with the new rubber
