Lightbulb Custom roof rack on a shoestring

So I wanted a roof rack for my disco, cant justify the $1,200 for one shaped to the roof and not very keen on a high roofrack on my vehicle that already is 15cm higher than factory....

so I thought, why not make one?

first, buy a rack ..I won this one on evilbay for a little over $200, originally it came off a 60 series land cruiser. ...first thing I did was to cut off the gutter mounts.

I then measured the difference in hight from the lower front to the higher back of the roof and cut the whole rack into 2 pieces. once this was done I removed the high retaining wall piece from the part of the rack that would be sitting higher, stepped it up and welded it back together. ...lengthen the gutter stands and give it a coat of paint

    1 roof rack!

...the pics describe it better than I can.

pretty happy with it. its as solid as a brick, nice and strong and came out of it for under $300 which included beer.

If (like me) you can't make one or afford a new one, find one you like & make the owner an offer! I got this alloy one - including a genuine LR ladder for the rear door, for $400!!

I was looking at exactly the same conversion just before the Melbourne Cup weekend but ran out of time, might just start looking for that rack to mod now .
