Exclamation SELECTABLE Ipod/Aux input for stnd D2 head unit instructions (no hacking of cables)

    Hi all,

After getting bored of changing CDs etc. I wanted to add an input for an Ipod or media player to the standard head unit on my D2. I wanted to keep the head unit & not have to replace it unnecessarily.

After some research I found that people were splicing the CD changers audio cables, not ideal–you have to have a CD playing & it mutes when changing discs.

So... I removed my head unit, opened her up & did a little research.

Today, I finally put the head unit back with my 'Ipod input' nicely added to the face & selectable. By this I mean I can have the cable connected or not & still select all functions–CD, FM, AM & Tape (never been used!).

How? Well, I select my input by pressing the AM button, simple. With the cable connected I hear my Ipod, with it removed I hear AM, something I never use anyway. This way the cable can be left in place...
I have all audio controls, fade, balance, bass, treble etc. & it sounds great.

If anyone is interested I can take some time to post instructions. It's not difficult if you can use a soldering iron. You also don't have to add the input to the face but it is a nice touch.

Wow, that was quick. I wasn't sure how useful the info would be.

I will put details up, I will have to do some diagrams and adapt photos. As always, didn't take many.
You will see from instructions that it's not difficult at all once you have the necessary info. Just to be clear, this is only an audio input at this stage but looks & works great. The unit is all logic controlled so any 'hacks' or 'mods' to try & fool the system just don't work.

Here's a pic of mine in place.

Sorry for the delay, I've not had time to do a write up of any kind so here is some quick info:

I put my input on the face of the head unit, looks stock but is a little awkward with a jack plugged in. I will put another input maybe above the cigi power plug.
Had another thought also but will require some more research, a Bluetooth input internally... We will see.

    Quick instructions:
    1. Remove your head unit & disconnect
    2. Remove the top plate, 2 screws
    3. Remove the cassette unit, 4 screws then lifts out
    4. You will now see the circuit board clearly, look for an ic with the following numbers: (IC202) TEA6320
    5. You will connect your ipod input to pins 11 & 22 via the small capacitor. pin 11 is left channel, pin 22 is right channel.
    6. I will attach a photo showing my soldered connection & where to cut the track.
    7. If you trace back from pin 11 & 22 you will see a small surface mount capacitor (a little brown rectangle), you can soldier to the top of this, your audio must go 'through' this to the IC. (if this makes sense)...
    8. The track that goes from this soldered side to a small hole (this passes the circuit to the other side of the board) must be cut. I connected my jack plug to this too so it would still play 'am' if nothing was plugged in.
    9. I used 'bread board' cables to connect to the board, they are thin & have a solid end (as in photo).

Quick I know, but I'm sure once head unit out you will see how easy (but fiddly) it is.
Please note that I accept no responsibility if something goes wrong. This does work & sounds great. The small tracks are delicate so take care, it is worth it, I no longer have any CDs in the changer–not required so might remove it.
Everything still works as it should with the addition of an ipod input.
You can of course use the input for anything:
    Satnav audio, TV screen...

My AM button is now reffered to as 'Audio Mod'.

Nice work. Though if, like me you find yourself half way across the Simpson and every form of audio craps out bar the radio you'll wish you disabled AM by the time you get out. Try 4 days of nothing but tennis on the radio.

    pop, pop, pop, pop, cheer
    repeat
    repeat
    repeat...

At least now there is another source of audio, be it from a mobile, ipod, media player etc.
So when you do the Simpson again you should be entertained.

The other thing is the CD player is mechanical and low down just where water would get to first. Modern media is electronic, I have a small media player in the top roof pocket with the cable down inside the 'A' pillar. If that gets drowned I know I'm probably stuck!
It's a little 5v unit that feeds the head rest screens and can supply audio to my modded head unit. A USB stick full of entertainment.

P.S. For the mod, the IC your looking for is located towards the top left looking from the front.
I used a switched 3.5 mm jack from Jaycar, if nothing is plugged in the unit operates as normal.

Well done diesel, you have done what people who own Land Rovers all around the world want out of their OEM stereo. That place in the US actually makes a killing from doing this. You could go into business here in Australia.

Thank you, hopefully it will make people less likely to cut up their dash or fit head units that look out of place & lose things like steering wheel controls & rear audio controls.
Not too sure about offering a service but I'd be happy to help anyone who needs more detailed info.
