:( Everything is at a halt at the moment. Took my Defender in to get a new timing belt and the mechanic found the nose of the crankshaft was stuffed as someone had previously used a cut off piece of drill bit in place of the correct woodruff key to hold the pulley in place. This has gradually worn out the groove which means for safety's sake, requires an engine rebuild.
Searching for options now.. looks like a $7000+ job at this point. On the plus side I guess i'll have a "new" engine so won't need to worry about that when I'm deep in inland Australia.
Funny thing is that only weeks before I was staring at my engine thinking how great it would be to have a new one for the trip... careful what you wish for. ;)
