didnt the guy who did a 4x4 is born use a rangie chassis?
Hi guys,
I was reading last months L/R Owner international mag last night & there is a team from alldrive 4x4 in England who is in the middle of building an 100" 109 coil sprung pick up. using an disco 1 chassis engine & running gear. According to there reports there welding in a pair of series bulk head out riggers, then using defender bulkhead, series 11a windscreen, series 11a or 111 truck cab & a series 111 back body. They have also purchased a new 110 rear cross member. I was wondering if a range rover chassis could be used instead of the disco chassis? I was also wondering if there was still adequate room for the v8? I'm in the process of sending off some emails to various companies involved, as this would be a great way to still have a v8 in a series body. I too would love to have a v8 in a series land rover, & i have received my inspiration from Mr Slunnie, i loved looking at his " ute 2 " build up. Well done mate.
I was thinking that this might be a cheaper alternative that incorporates newer running gear in an older vehicle. I currently have an 4.6 92 vogue, that would look great converted in to a series 3 coil cab ute.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.![]()

there have been many of these done around the world....although the series vehicles have their character, I would use a defender windscreen...they are taller and offer better vision.
No reason a RR chassis could not be used, at any event its going to take modding and customization.
Just go to Google and start searching . . . you'll find a lot of sites where someone has done this. The first one was built in the 70s using a Range Rover chassis and Series body, so it can certainly be done. In fact, that's pretty much how the factory started working on their 90 and 110 models.
At any given point in time, somewhere in the world someone is working on a Land-Rover.
Thanks mate.
I think..... that another consideration needs to be how you will register it and have it comply with the rules/regs.
It may be worth also looking at a County V8 chassis and having it shortened by 10" between the innermost suspension points and having it plated etc and engineer approved for registration. The everything will just drop on from there. If you want a series type cab I would have expected a SeriesIII entire cab (with seat belts) to be very very similar to the Countys, and probably just drop on. I'll find out shortly as Ute2 goes onto a coil chassis (shhh). If you go this way, you will need to use a Stage 1 front end rather than the recessed facia to make it fit the engine. The county chassis is a much stronger chassis than the Disco/RRC's and likewise you can still fit factory power steering. While its apart, its a great time for a ZF/LT230 conversion if that floats your boat too. Another advantage of using the modified County chassis is that it comes with 32" tyres standard and more ride height than Discos and Rangies, so you also get around a few more rules/regs when trying to fit appropriate or larger tyres where we are now even more limited.
Cheers
Slunnie
