    Another Duramax powered Defender

    Yep,

I'm a sucker for punishment. I haven't even finished the 1st one and startanother! Bit of background, I have had this extra cab for many years (2ndowner) and as my work bus i love driving it but probably pushing the designboundaries of what it was initially designed for. When I was coming back fromMelrose last Easter, i blew the lay shaft in the gear box and I thought it wasa good excuse to buy another 6.6tLTR Duramax and Allison 6 speed auto as wewere due to go to the US shortly after for a holiday. I found one suitable andit arrived 3 months later.

Photos shows I sometimes drive it at maximum GCM of 7.0 tonnes and the old300 motor has a hard time maintaining speed. Then again it struggles with ahead wind empty.

I stripped the Ute last year and started on the mods in prep for the motorarrival. I drew all the plates etc. in AutoCAD and had them laser cut to speedthe process up. Currently I have the motor in and engine mounts done. I havealso mounted the auto and transfer case in. Plan is to get all fabrication finishedby end of January and remove drive train to weld out mounts etc. While this ishappening, my brother is going to help me with painting Puma bonnet and floormods etc.

I hope to have it ready by Melrose this Easter so busy lad at the moment.

    Sump Mods

The sump and oil pan requires mods as too close to tailshaft. The gearbox has to be pulled off as there is 2 bolts in behind the flex plate so not a 5 minute job. Gearbox is damn heavy!! Amyway, i chopped the sump and made a new alloy pan as the existing steel one had some lining which i was worried about getting into the oil pick up. I also changed the turbo down pipe as original one is quite restrictive.

    Crazy hey

    Yep,
I'm looking forward to seeing the 101 at Easter! I can cheat a little as i will pinch a couple of parts , intercooler, radiator and fan shrouds etc. I at least dont need to reinvent the wheel as i have most things sussed!

    Cheers

True! So, you'll be going Hy Tough shafts all round, Ashcroft CV's... etc etc.. What transfer box are you using against the Allison? If the 101 had been longer and not so tall I'd have used an Allison 1000. 'twas not to bee tho! I'll be throwing a tape under yours tho to see if its at all feasible at a later date!

    Hytough's

I've got Maxi's in the back all ready but want to sort some 35 splines out. Wouldnt mind Ascroft's force 9 but $$$$$. Wonder how long it will take me to break something? I'm using the LT230 as i wanted to keep it constant 4wd. The Allison is quite long.

Yeah, that was what I wanted too... I spoke to David at Ashcrofts re they're Truetrac as a replacement for the center diff, and he said not to bother, just upgrade to the one piece cross shaft and lock the CDL the minute you leave the black top.. I've gone for a 1.222:1 Disco box as it seems the gears with that ratio are wider by about 10mm than the other ratios. Time will tell I guess... with both our vehicles!

    More Progress

Been too busy to post any updates as been working on the ute. Pretty well all fabrication is done besides completing trans tunnel fibreglassing. My bro (tup39)chas painted the puma bonnet for me and looks that good i will have to give the rest of the ute a good cut & polish. We sandblasted the inside of the chasssis where i did the welding and painted it black to give it a tidy up. I am now commencing the final assembly and still trying to have complete by easter, bar any major issues. Exhaust is fabbed, just needs final weld out. Dog wasn't much help!
