Auber EGT & Boost Gauge Install (TD5)

After a lot of research, I ended up with a digital gauge. I decided against having a dial gauge stuck on the dash somewhere, and like the flexibility of this setup.

I purchased everything direct from Auber Instruments USA.

    SYL-2813 dual channel meter
    AUBER-303 pressure sensor
    TC-KEGTL long EGT sensor
    FLBuz-12 flashing buzzer

Meter was fitted into the ash tray. Just needed a bit of work with the dremel to carve out a slot. I plan to fit the alarm just to the left.

EGT went straight in the blanking plate from the EGR on the manifold.
Pressure was tapped into the waste gate modulator feed, so is closer to turbo outlet rather than manifold. Oh, and there is already a hole in the dash hidden below the brake booster. Not sure what its for, but made an easy job sliding the cables through.

If I were doing it again, I would get the same temperature probe from eBay and pay $4 instead of $40. The Auber one comes from China anyway and looks identical.

Only disappointment is that the sample rate of the 2 channel meter is very slow. I had read that the single channel unit was 4Hz which is reasonable, and assumed the 2 channel was the same. Its probably half that if you're lucky. That's not a problem for EGT, but for boost which changes quite quickly your chances of reading a transient peak are not good. Still good for getting a look at whats happening though, and I can already see the boost going above 20psi right as I feel the fuel cut kick in. Next job might have to be the boost box!

It does have peak hold on both channels, so you can recall the peak value later on. The brightness dims with headlamps (adjustable) and you can easily get a feed for this from the illuminated switches right above the ashtray.

The main advantage of this setup is that its very flexible. If I no longer need to monitor boost, I could swap that out for fuel pressure, oil pressure, coolant temp, anything.

Some photos attached, let me know if further info required.

Do you have something to trap the oil for your boost pressure transducer? I suspect it will fill up with oil pretty fast. I have a little foam filter before mine and it didnt take long before it was getting black.

Quick update. I've noticed that while the egt readings make sense at first, once the car is fully warmed up (20 mins) the readings drastically drop to below 200C. I've ruled out the meter by trying another type. I explained this to auber by email and they promptly posted out a new sensor. Can't complain about the service!

    Will update when that arrives.

    Auber great service

Received replacement EGT sensor yesterday. Fitted last night.
    Now working perfectly.

Great service from Auber to replace the faulty sensor without question.

What sort of quality would the Chinese Probe off eBay be? Installing the probe Pre Turbo, I'd hate for it to fail (fall apart) and go through the Turbo??

This is similar to the setup I want in my Tdi.... Using pretty much the same stuff.... I assume this would still be possible with the TDi?

Also.... Why did u use the longer Probe? I would have thought the 35mm one would have suited as well

The Auber probe was made in China as well, so probably comparible. As it is sleeved in stainless steel and quite thick, I don't think it will disintegrate. However as mentioned above I had trouble with the accuracy of the first one, and Auber replaced it without question. It has been perfect ever since. That peace of mind is worth something.

I would say longer probe is just long enough on a td5 as the egr point is slightly extended off the manifold, and you probably want it into the gas flow. If it's too long you can slide it back out through the fitting, where as if it's too short you're stuck.

Hi, I know this is an old one. But I am about to do the same... How did you connect the power? Ive seen these Narva 'Add a circuit' things that plug straight into fuse box. But dont have much experience with electrical so was keen to see what you did. Thanks! Steve
