    Honda Crossroad Winch Challenge Truck

    Hey everyone,

Well, me and a mate picked up our Honda Crossroad today to start building it into our Winch Comp truck.

It is a 1996 3.9L Auto with 167k on the clock. It drives well, and changes gear smoothly. But the brakes are rubbish, the engine has a slight tapping noise from the passenger side rocker cover, usual oil weeps underneath, body rust in places but the chassis looks solid.

The long term plan is a 350/LS1 repower, space frame, 4-link, crazy winch monster.

HOWEVER, with an initial budget of 3k including the purchase price ($1200) and what ever profits we make from selling surplus parts, Stage 1 will be very basic.

    So, to start us off.

    - Strip unwanted interior
    - Strip unwanted chassis material (sway bars etc)
    - Lighten panels where possible
    - Cut down the body to a cab plus
    - Cut down chassis and add a new rear crossmember
    - Cut down passenger door
    - Rear mount Runva EWX9500
    - Some sort of fuel cell that might just end up being a jerry can stropped to something.
    - Tray back with spare and storage boxes
    - Airbox and snorkel
    - Front or rear fiddle brakes (undecided which would be best)
    - 35x10.5R16 Mudster tires on my original Perentie rims that will be flipped and turned into beadlocks.
    - Rear mount radiator and trans cooler
    - Race seats and harnesses
    - Truss diffs

Plus a MASSIVE service of the engine and drivetrain.

All this with only eighteen hundred bucks!

99% of the work will be done by us, some parts may be rough due to budget but it should be a lot of fun. The idea is to beat all the Nissan Safari TD42 comp trucks that we see so much of in Auckland, for a fraction of the price.

    Tomorrow after work, it begins!

Our winch rules that we will be going by, we will likely end up straight into Modified class.

    Sorry, I forgot the photo!

Funny you don't have them there, they are a Japanese assembled Discovery that was then imported to NZ probably second hand.

I like that it's a Honda, when we beat all the Toyota's and Nissans we can say they were beaten by a Honda haha.

So if they are assembled in Japan they must be reliable good cars

They would have six sigma'd, Kanbanned, and JIT'd the heck out of it.
Never again would the workers need to use a dodgy fastener, or turn a blind eye to that incorrectly pressed body panel, or poorly fitted electrical connector.
There would be military precision in every corner of the production line, and little white hardhats and face masks as far as the eye can see...

the tapping noise is most likely the exhaust manifold studs or gasket...

As promised, we got stuck into it after work.

A loooot of rust. When we bought the truck it smelt damp and we expected a bit of rust, but what we found was a surprise.

All along the bottom under neath that black trim was just rust all the way through.

Rear door top and internals removed

And the mess under the passenger rocker. The rocker arm is soaking in diesel.

We we stand as of now:

Interior is removed up to the dash and center console. Rear barn door removed, rear door tops removed. Need to grind the bolts off the front seats because they use a very large Torx bit that I don't have.

Also what is with the rocker cover bolts? 12 point M8!? Who has those!

I'll get a photo tomorrow of the crap that came out, because there was a lot of it! We managed to roll it into the garage, but I don't think it will get out now haha.
