You could install a VNT in a day, but not on my watch!

Beer oclock right now, and progess to report...

I will have me a vent on each side wing to improve airflow through the engine bay, and keep temps down when the landy is boosting through the sound barrier.

A factory'ish look is the go so I am using a TD5/Puma outer wing skin on the drivers side and a 200tdi skin on the passenger's.

The skins are plastic from BRITPART.... excuse the profanity. But considering the aluminium skins all eventually bubble up with corrosion I figured Id give them a go.

The skins are a good mould but the holes for the top skin and headlight surround were off , I needed to elongate all of them to get it to sit pretty. The rear slots to bulkhead and the holes for the wheel arches look to be in line. To be fair my wings have had a few knocks, but still, a typical ****part effort.

    Off to paint tomorrow.

Ah my Sunday for the turbo install......

Well that was the plan but the ceasefire on the electrics broke and we're back at war.

And then the clutch pedal housing looked at me funny so that had to come out! (leaking master cylinder)

But I did flush the IC with shellite, and thats most def turbo related progress! TDI VNT Turbo Upgrade +++

    Finally got the panels back!

When I bought this 90 it had been resprayed in an unknown perhaps custom mixed colour, so getting the colour matched has been a challenge.

A guy at a panel shop once said to me "If we couldnt paint match we'd be out of business!" . Funny that he then proceeded to ask for the paint code and when told it is an unknown custom paint job he advised I go elsewhere.

So for those in Melbourne who want a custom colour match, I highly recommend Milsomes Auto Paints in Ferntree Gully. They matched the colour from one of my wheel arches. Apparently not so easy when its metallic but their match is spot on as far as I can tell.

The driver side wing went on today - what a pig of a job! A new inner wing combined with the britpart outer skin created a lot of alignment issues to resolve. The bolts that connect the outer wing to inner wing were almost impossible to get through and tighten due to the plastic wings internal structure.

The moment I realised britpart cant measure for **** is when I tried to fit the side vent cover. Barely half the holes were drilled and the ones they had a go at didnt even line up properly!

I was hoping to get more done today, but on the plus side I have the rhs wing all bolted up and its looking pretty good.

    VNT Install

Hi manic, any progress on the turbo yet? I love mine. I bought one off ebay for $150 and used a 200tdi exhaust manifold and made my own adapter plate. I love the way it drives now.

Nice to see you over doing it I like that style.
In regards to your breather, the thing routed into the chassis rail would be ok for a while, right up until the point the oil built up and started leaking out the drain holes! On the plus side it'll never rust...

Not much progress, no. I have friends from overseas visiting, so Ive been full on social the past few weekends. Exhausting!

A little update then. The boost sender!

Previously I had it tapped into the top intercooler pipe but I always wanted to make use of the mystery bolt on the intake manifold.

Thread is m12x1.5, so I got an adapter made up for a 1/8npt connection at 90 degrees.

The sender fits snug between the manifold and heater pipe. Along with the wiring it will be hidden by the acoustic cover. Tidy! TDI VNT Turbo Upgrade +++

Turbo oil feed and drain hooked up. After fresh oil and filter, I turned the engine over with fuel cut off to pump some oil through the turbo housing.

Manifolds all torqued up, EGT probe done. Still need to wire up the boost sender.

Adapted power steering hose back in, resevoir repositioned and topped up.

Air box bracket done. Ordered up some parts for the intake piping. A bit of luck should see that side all connected up next weekend.

Then figure out the exhaust side!
