Thanks Foz. We'll see how we go!
Ambrose has an Ammeter and an Alternator, so I will have to see how that is wired up...
A couple of tips on your looms.
The English models (and possibly) some Aussie models had a heater on the carby. This is the thick wire an the far end of the alternator loom that doesn't connect to the black three way. There was also a cold start switch wire (green with yellow stripe?). This was on the intake side of the head at the front. It wont have a thermostat wire although you can use this switch wire if you don't have the switch and id the other end correctly. The carb heater had a switch on the dash to operate and this is what the rubber booted ring terminals are for (not a starter solenoid I first thought!!).
Also, because you are using an alternator you wont be able to connect your ammeter anymore. Firstly because the loom wont let you and secondly it wouldn't be able to cope with the amps anyway. Can only use the charge light from now on!
I found I had to lay it all out on the floor and work through it methodically with the wiring diagram and a multimeter. Some is very obvious, some is not.
Take your time and sooner or later you will get that very satisfying Eureka moment.![]()

Yeah so did mine. only thing is if its the standard ammeter in the cluster it's only rated to 20amps. There was a higher amperage meter available but that still only went up to 30amps. most of the alternators that are used are above that now, so it's either an after market ammeter such as a 50mm stand alone jobby or do I as will be and replace the ammeter with a ballast resitor and temperature guage. I will also replace the fuel sender and fuel guage with the later ones to as 1) they're easy to get and 2) my one is stuffed anyway.
Ahh I see...
Ambrose has nothing where the standard ammeter should be (not even markings - its just black!) but he has a round smiths (?) ammeter near the map light left of the dash.
Thanks mate.![]()

Hmm...
I have been concerned for a while that the parabolics seem to be a little tall for old Gus. The front seems to sit fine, but the back seems to be jacked up sky high!
Granted, there is no weight on the back and I haven't even got the roof on, but this is causing me concern. I got one of my shockies out yesterday (extra length) and gave it a test fit. It is too short by a mile. The angles on the rear propshaft look a bit savage as well...
They are definately the correct springs (ie - not LWB ones) and they don't appear to be directional. The length from eye to center bolt is the same on either side, and there is no markings to indicate that they should be fitted a certain way.
Maybe the springs just need to settle, but it seems to me that the required settling is beyond reality!
Pics later.![]()

Our Land Rover does not leak oil! it just marks its territory.......
Yeah yeah...
I am plodding along again now. Don't expect the mass of progress you got a few months ago though. Never doing that again.
At least I put up writing... hows your 2A going eh? eh?![]()

Yeah... still haven't got back into it properly. Just plodding - very slowly I might add.
Have been getting my head around the new loom, and mostly have that all sussed out. Since I'm not under the pump anymore, I decided to pull the radiator support panel and get that done properly, rather than having to pull it out again post rego.
I took it back to bare metal, converted the small amount of rust in the seams and gave it a coat of cold gal.
Will put it in colour soon and bung it back in.
Didn't take a pic of it in cold gal. Its just grey...

Got the rad support in colour, but shagged my mixing on the last coat and ran it out way to dry.
Rubbed it smooth and will redo the top coat when I get around to it. I need to improve my moisture trap setup too. I'm not happy with it.
Other than that I haven't done much. Am getting increasingly bored after work though, and the weather is warming up so I will come out of hibernation and get some Landy happening!
