Disco TD5 Turbo Upgrade

Hi Turbocharger, Looks like you are having fun with your install. I love doing my own R&D, experimenting and developing stuff. However the Disco is my daily driver so I wasn't keen on messing round trying to get something going. I wanted something reliable and proven.

My VNT runs off manifold pressure working on a diaphragm actuator. The guy that supplied the turbo has worked out the set up. I reckon he's spent a fair bit of time and R&D getting the right combination of components together to make it work.

I'm happy to leave that part of the process up to him. I figured it was something that'd be easy to stuff up and possibly do major damage. Paying for his 35 years experience saves me the headache. ;)

From what the turbo guy said it really needs to be set up on a Dyno though. As I understand it if not done right the turbo can just jump straight to 20 or 30 PSI of boost.

I'll stick with the fabricating side of it as I do an OK job for a back yard workshop.

I don't have an EGT or Boost gauge but I plan to fit both in the future.

As I understand it, the ECU wont allow this and is more than likely why you're getting the surging. It cuts fuel at 19psi or something.

Absolutely outstanding work Michael. And Again,I will have customers lined up to buy an installation like this I reckon...

That's definitely what it feels like. The turbo is probably pumping out more than 17 or 19PSI or what ever the number is and the ECU is pulling fuel because it's in over boost.

I drove in to work this evening to sort out a few things. I notice the Turbo has quite a different sound to the old one. You can hear it spool up and down as you go. Sounds quite cool.

Running without the engine cover and I cant tell if its any louder in the cabin. It's certainly not worth putting it back on as I reckon it's just a cosmetic thing. It can hang on the back wall of the shed next to the dart board.

Im not even a fan of the diesel motor but this looks and sounds like it was well thought out.Would love to see what sort of hp your making now.I could be converted from a V8.:p Good luck with it and maybe you could get some footage of it on the dyno for all those diesel fans.

I'm more of a fan of petrol power for performance but I'm surprised how quickly it gets along for a 2.5 Diesel. I'd be keen to line it up next to an auto V8 Disco 2 and see which one is quicker up to 100Km/h

Still haven't managed to get in to get the boost set on the dyno. I think the heat has been giving the workshop a hard time getting through their current workload.

We'll the results are in.

I got it on the Dyno earlier this week. It made 81KW at the wheels and 1181NM of torque.

Bear in mind it's an auto so it's difficult to get a decent reading unless you can force the converter to lockup.

It's not as peppy now as when I first got it fired up. Turns out the bosst was at 22 pounds before it went on the dyno and now it's been wound back to 16 pounds. The dyno guy was concerned that my hose from the turbo wouldn't take the high pressure for long and fail. I'm working on a better setup for this pipe with some decent silicone reinforced hose. Once that's done I'll wind the boost up some more.

It's not surging anymore at least. I figure I'll fit a boost gauge and an EGT and then wind it up gradually and see how it goes.

One thing we found on the exhaust gas analyser is that my tune is excessively rich when you put your foot down. This may have been the reason for the original turbo failing. I might have to investigate geting a reflash from someone else.

Strangely though it doesn't blow a lot of black smoke which to me tends to disagree with analyser.

Any reputable ECU reflash tuners you can reccomend?
