i was not aware of the ausie slang of turkish coffee and hash. i was not speaking of hash.:( sorry
tallgrass,
Been told a few times that the idea of drinking hot tea in a warm climate is all about getting the persperation going to increase the cooling effect as the persperation evaporates from your skin.
I suspect like Mike that it has more to do with tradition and a need to drink to prevent dehydration. I don't know if it was a case of boiling the locally collected water and masking the flavour of dead animals in the water with the tea.
For whatever reason we do drink it and I suspect that the low turn over of tea on the shop shelves in the North American continent means that tea is not as fresh and therfore doesn't taste as good over there.
No it's not slang for hashish, however hashish is commonly added to Turkish coffee. In fact there was a Turkish restaurant in Cleveland Street Sydney, that made traditional Turkish cuisine which included making Turkish coffee they way they had in the old country. It was very popular for a time, that was until the Police Drug Squad raided the joint and arrested the owner. He claimed he didn't know it was illegal to use hashish in coffee.
never heard of drinking hash. interesting.
think of it this way....
use your bong water to brew your coffee....
