'El Burro' 2012 Defender 90.
Thanks for the comments everyone! And happy 2019!
It's been a while since my last post, but a lot has happened. On the 8th of December our first Baby boy was born, so we've been going through all of that. It's all going well though! He's a great kid . It's hard to believe that I started this project when I was 22, and now I am 33 with a baby, wishing I didn't change the car from a 5 seater to a 2 seater! No room for the baby seat! hehe. Anyway, moving on.
There has been some progress but not a great deal, I'm still trying to sort out what I am going to do regarding the painting of the car. I wanted to get it coated with Polyurethane, but the guys that do the application (well, one in particular) is being impossible to give me a quote, despite numerous "you'll get it in an hour" promises. So I think i'm scrapping that option and may simply just go with a regular paint job.
I have been doing some bits and pieces in the mean time. One of those was some fixing up of the snorkels, with all the buttering I was doing with the TIG, the angle changed slightly, so I had to do some slotting to make the snorkels mount properly. Unfortunately, now if you look at the car from the side, the horisontal part of the snorkel isn't parallel with the lines of the car. It was when it was tack welded! Oh well.
I've installed the switch which isolates the secondary battery from the primary, it was needed to be done because the secondary battery was sitting there never getting a charge.
One of the requirements from the engineer was to get a weigh bridge certificate of the car for the Tare Weight of the car, which I've done. The car with half a tank of fuel comes in at 2.16 tons. Heavier than I would have thought to be honest! 1.14 tons on the front axle and 1.02 tons on the rear. With a full tank of fuel it is probably pretty close to a 50/50 weight distribution.
I didn't get a photo of the car at the weigh bridge but here it is getting fueled up on the way home
Last item of work that was done, was dealing with an annoying problem. The belt kept running forward on the power steering pump by one groove causing it to fray.
I thought that the culprit was the alternator pulley being too far forward. So I pulled it apart and found that there was a spacer washer that could be easily removed to make the pulley sit a little further back.
But there was a problem, remove the washer, and then the spacer was too short and the shank of the shaft prevented the pulley compressing the impeller. So I had to get creative with the dremel. Amazing what you can resort to when you don't want to pull something apart!
My little in-situ shaft grinder worked perfectly, so I put everything back together. Below is the spacer washer which was removed as well.
Started the engine, and the belt immediately skipped forward again. Next up I checked the angles of all the pulleys, I found that the power steering was sitting about 1deg nose up. So I loosened all it's brackets and adjusted it down to be the same angle as all the other pulleys.
Started the engine and again, it jumped forward... Getting frustrated, I decided that there was only one thing left, that the power steering pump was sitting too far back. So I unbolted it, shimmed it forward by 1.6mm and at last, it stayed!
Last thing, which I still haven't finished, is that the oil coolers between the rear wheel arches and the tray are recirculating air, so not cooling very effectively. This is mainly a problem on the transmission oil cooler, where I noticed the oil could easily go above 100degC. So I needed to duct the hot air out the side of the tray, and I'm doing that with a rubber skirt, which I've cut below. It won't make much sense at the moment, but it will when I install it - perhaps this weekend!
Till next time!

Congratulations on the bub
Now you start again, this time with room for four and baby stuff.
Have you thought of wrapping instead of painting?

Congrats on the bub mate
Looking good .
Good to see some progress
2pac paint it yourself. It is a truck so save the $ and paint in drive on cloudy day. It is going to get scratched when used so not worth paying a painter.
also easier to repair or reprint if 2pac paint vs clear and colour.

Thanks everyone!
By the way rar110, you had a modified defender ute right? This isn't it, is it? 1995 Custom Landrover Defender on Portals (Engineered in NSW) – Vehicles – Sydney, Australia – Marketplace | Facebook I could have my info wrong but I could have sworn it was you/
Anyway, back onto the usual business of updating.
Amongst baby duties, work duties, eating and socialising, I've been putting in a bit of work here and there.
As I mentioned in the previous post, I had cut out the rubber skirts to duct the hot air from the oil cooler fans out without recirculating it.
Right hand side done
Left hand side done (the important transmission oil cooler)
Dad came down and gave me a hand with some of the finishing body work items.
The C pillars were again fixed up. The thin fibreglass keeps changing shape so I need to keep straightening it up. I think it's now all over and settled.
The holes of the snorkels were fibreglassed over so that they could be cut again more tightly.
Then it was on to opening the holes again.
Repeat on the other side, one small mistake in the grinding, but it won't be visible when the rubber is fitted over the edge
Finally, my paint arrived with a small tinting pot of Tangiers Orange . Hopefully in a week or so I'll be painting!
