We have gone a bit quite the last few days - done a lot of work with little to show.

Yesterday and today

We installed a jacking point to the rear of the slider as the ones under the rear tray are useless.

Found the A/C leak in a pipe near the radiator - removed, had it welded and re-installed. I will evacuate the system next week to check for any other leaks. There was absolutely no gas in the system.

Also, found a rattle on the fuel cooler - this had been removed previously and the lower bolt re-installed was too long and wouldnt clamp it.

Checked Turbo - appears OK

Replaced the rear tail shaft - original shaft bent during salvage process.

The missing radiator hose from the pump to the thermostat and also to the fuel cooler will be here by Friday.

Also bought a pair of new front seat belts.

Andrew has done heaps more on the tray - rear.

Weather forecast looks clear for next weekend for painting!

We are going down the coast to Calalla Beach tomorrow so we will be having a break for a day or so.

I wish the rain/wind would bugger off, so dad can finish the paint.

I have been working on this every day with not too much to show for it. installed bushes in all the tray hinges, so they wont rattle, capped off the tray sides where they were shortened, and installed the hinges and latch on the front pocket cover.

Its pretty much as far as i can go on the tray without removing it, so i started on the sterio install.

The head unit, which should be arriving soon is one of these. Ipod, blue tooth, sub controller, usb, all the usual stuff. I could have gone for one of those touch screen in-built gps things, but they will last 10 minute in the Gapuwiyak dust. Pioneer head units have always been good to me, so i will continue to support them.

The Bulk of the gear will be going behind the rear seat, so i made up some ply board covers to mount it all on. (will get covered in carpet when its all done).

The speakers will be - 2 JBL 6x9s (rear sides behind rear seat), 2 pioneer 2ways up front, and 2 10 inch JBL subs running off a clarion monobloc amp behind the middle of the rear seat. Also 2 tweeters hidden behind the rear seatbelts. I should be getting this stuff tomorrow.

I would have love to put some 6 inch speakers in the doors instead of the rear 6x9s, but running the wiring is a bit of a pain (defenders dont have any door wiring like discos and rangies).


I have run a similar setup years ago in my single cab ute, and for the subs to fit properly, you need spacers as the gap between the back of the cab and the plywood is not enough.

Dad recieved his final hose today, along with the thermostat and alloy housing, so he should have it driving again tomorrow if all goes well.

I'm loving these rims we are using, they make it look as wide as it is long. lucky they dont have white posts in Gapuwiyak, as the tyres it would wipe them out both sides at once.........:D

Who needs guide posts - just getting to one of the favourite fishing spots might become a challange!

Having said that, the tyres will be awsome in the mud, especially either side of the wet season and sandy beaches.

.......... And the turning circle for the 130 will be awesome - better than my Defender!

Slow and steady would be nice but the Wet season won't wait for us unfortunately and we don't really want to wait till May next year to drive it up.

I would have some pretty pictures of the above sound system today, but my 1 month old phone decided to die :(. There will be some tomorrow though.

Those subs are massive. 350W rms :twisted: I'll need to space them out alot further than i expected, they will double up as a back masage for anyone sitting in the rear seat.

Its the first real audio install i have attempted, so if anyone has any tips or pointers feel free to chime in.

Dad has sanded the roof back, and re-sealed it, should be very water tight now (not enough to float). He also got most of the engine back together. I wish this rain would bugger off, as once he starts painting, it will be a big motivator.

There is a bit of soot around the passengers side of the engine bay, but when running we cant see or hear any leaks. There are no broken studs either. Where do they normally leak? It may have already changed by the previous owner though.

Work done today - 9th October - drizzled all day and high winds:mad::mad:

All preventative maintenance type work.
replaced the water pump. This was so tight I removed the power steering pump to drive it out. The old pump appears to be in quite good condition.

replaced radiator hose attachment
fixed stripped thread in centrifical oil filter lid
fitted new thermostat
repaired cracked air cleaner box
protected A/C lines from chaffing

replaced all radiator - water hoses. The top of the A/C compressor is always a point of rubbing for the top radiator hose. We added heaps of rubber insertion to minimise this.

The water line under the exhaust manifold which is prone to failure was badly aligned. We bent the metal pipe along the rear of the engine to straighten this a bit and reduce the strain on the hose. There has been an exhaust leak repaired done previously.

started re-assembly of engine bay. Looking for the radiator support mounts - misplaced them. We protected all lines from rub points after the experienced with chaffed lines.

removed the roof for painting. This roof came off a vehicle which had a fire inside the cab.

resealed all the joints in the roof prior to painting. These are a common source of Land Rover leaks.

First time in about 10 days that the weather was clear for half the day at least. We sprayed the roof and rear section with 2 pack hifill and rubbed all back with 600, ready for final paint. This took quite some time.

Forgot the windscreen surround. I started to clean one up without disturbing the frame with glass on it currently.

Also:
Finished the hose installation, topped up the water, changed the oil and ran the engine. No leaks. Will drain in a day or so and add inhibitor - not OAT as this is not readily available in remote areas.
