I bought this setup from a chap that lived in the hills about 1 year ago
It's about a 1980's hull that was originally setup with a jet unit from the day it was brand new
The original Jet unit was made in Melbourne and was painted blue
Couple of pics of "As I found it"
I took to this boat straight away ... and had bought it in 10 minutes flat
The original motor is a Holden 308 that ran a 4 barrel Rochester
The previous owner had removed the old jet unit & had just installed this one ... It's a reconditioned "Jacuzzi" that he imported from the USA ... the only info that I got on it's specs was that it was originally strapped to the back of a 400 cubic
The back of the "Jacuzzi"
So now ... The work begins ....
Ive stripped everything off it, and it is back to a bare Hull ....
I tried to buff up the Gelcoat to make it shine, but it is too far gone ... So I've packed it off to the painters for a complete 2 pack epoxy paint job
I've pulled the heads off the motor.. and by the looks of the pistons, it's at the end of it's life ..... so I'm hunting for a "OK condition" replacement 308, so that I can get it running and start figuring out what it can do
Summer Holidays ... here we come![]()

Yea, the price was right ... sort of bought the Jet unit and got a free boat & trailer.....
This isn't the first restore I've done, which was a reeeeeeeal learning curve about buying a boat thats got enamel paint on it .... Lets just say that you would have to PAY me $$$$$$ to take it
Well ... It's all stripped and parked up at the painters
The trailer has a good chassis .. but it has the old rubber flex suspension which is knackered + it has no brakes ...
With this whole lot going to weigh between the 900 to 1100kg range, I'm gonna shell out for a new suspension & brakes.
Also have to setup new rollers and a rear aligning bar for easy loading
Still hunting another motor

You got any Yankee importers over your way? Why don't you stick something like a 440 chrysler in it$1200 and jet away
Looks a fun bit of gear. I can tell you they hate ingesting ski rope
We had one in the 80's with the 440. Was an ex coast patrol boat so had a bit of age on it. Worst part was flogging out the splines in the drive shaftHad no back up when it happened
.
Looking forward to seeing the end product
Cheers Tony
Ripped apart the 308 ... Gonna freshen up the rings & shells ... The bores still have some hone marks left in them & the shells have a date of 94 stamped in them ... so the estimate would be the block has had a rebuild in 94 / 95
Pistons look good and the bore has very little, if no lip at the top, on it
Piston numbers ....
Con rod shells .... 10thou under
Top cap is the bottom shell ... conrod "top shell" at bottom
Left cap is the bottom shell ... conrod "top shell" on right
Right cap is the bottom shell ... conrod "top shell" on Left

Hey mate
As discussed last night, by the looks of the shells now you have the pics up, you will need a regrind on the bigends at least. They have massive uneven wear on the cap shell plus that big centre groove is going to kill new shells if you put them in. The shell in the rod is almost at the point of delaminating.
That kind of uneven wear is either due to an out of aligned rod or the caps were mixed up and not put back on their respective rods last time it was done.
I would go the extra few bucks and have the crank reground and rods checked for straightness rather than give yourself a reason to turn it into a glass bottom boat......
Got a bit busy today so will get you pricing on bits, but let me know on machining and I will get you a deal.
Cheers
Andrew.
I take my hat off to you Andrew ... Correct, The piston numbers were not installed in their respective pots ... only the cap numbers matched ....
That's what I thought you'ld say that about the "Hot Spots" in the shells
I didn't want to spend the dollars on the motor at this stage of the game .... But what has to be done, must be done
OK, Crank grind, Will wait for "Da good news" .......
Mike

Hmmm,
is that a Haines 17R that received a top chop and transom workover... or has someone used a HH17 as a plug for the hull?
If so it should ride nice with the weight low and centred as the setup looks.
Will it just be a ski boat for calm water or do you have plans for freo to rotty ferry trips in 10 minute turn arounds!!!!
Looks like a tops project.
