Big Beyer Garratt 6029 restored at last

Here 'tis!!!:D When you see it you will have to admit they were a grand sight.:):) What they used to do was load coal at nearby Paxton colliery and then back out onto the main line and from a standing start attack the Fassifern Bank as you see in this clip.:D Note the Garrett with empties going the other way.

They seem to have been in a pretty sad state of disrepair even as far back a 1968.

But these many steam leaks certainly added to their majestic appearance.

Awesome Mr free:D Thanks for that:) Probably a stupid question but why is the smoke on the second loco white but the leading loco has very black smoke? Is one working harder that the other?

Only a guess, but maybe as they were near the end of their service life, corners where being cut on maintenance. I would imagine they would be a high maintenance piece of equipment and also they were getting the arse worked off them.:D

Can't answer that as I did not work on steam loco's. just an admirer.:) Maybe Drivesafe can answer that!!

Here's another clip of 6024 double heading with a 53 class loco climbing the Fassifern Bank.:D Wonder which loco would be doing most of the work?????

Sorry it is disabled, won't let me play it but if you go to U-Tube and put in something like "Garretts double heading up Fassifern Bank" you may be able to see it.

Bloody hell the 53 class looks very small in front of the big girl!!!! almost looks like 6024 is pushing the 53 along:D Thanks for finding that one:)

Hi disco man, you get changes in the colour of the smoke as fresh coal is blown into the fire box.

Each time coal is added to the firebox, the steam carries more cinders and goes a darker colour.

If you have a hot enough fire banked up in the firebox, you don’t need to add more coal for a while, so the fire is much cleaner and the steam is whiter.

And also the crew in the lead loco always reckoned the crew in the rear were bludging . lol
