The fastest I've travelled without flying.

A few years ago I travelled between London and Paris at 245km/h.

Last week, I was on the Beijing-Shanghai train travelling at 309km/h. It's surprising that it doesn't feel or look like one is travelling that quickly, especially as it was so smooth.

But today I caught the Shaghai-airport Mag Lev and saw 431km/h displayed on the screen - 7 minutes for the 30km trip (we did the return journey as well). Again, the feeling of speed was limited - until another Mag Lev passed in the opposite direction doing the same speed. The carriage got hit by a shock wave and the other train was gone in a split second. Can you imagine a train passing you, about 1 metre away, at 850+km/h?

The trip was relatively smooth with a bit of sideways motion. The train tilts into curves.

It wasn't cheap but it was worth it!

That sounds great. We went on the Shikassen in Japan and it was similar. Don't realise how fast it is. Imagine Sydney-Brisbane in 3 hours.

    Hi,
At those speeds, anything hit would be vapourised.

I’ve always liked this video. Have a look at the drivers face near the end.

Will have to watch it when I get home - anything owned by Google is blocked in China.

    That's quick.

Japan Rail is building a new maglev Shinkansen between Tokyo and Nagoya, and eventually Osaka - will have speeds of 505km/h and do Tokyo to Nagoya (285.6km) in 40 minutes and Tokyo - Osaka (438 km) in 67 minutes.

That'd mean Melbourne - Sydney in about 1 hour and 45 minutes and Melbourne - Adelaide in about 1 hour 26 minutes ...

I went on the Shanghai maglev a few years ago. As you said - the passing train gives a decent shock.
From memory though I thought it was up around 430kmh when I was on it.
