In Australia you could get a Classic RR fitted with a VM diesel (run away! Search for some threads regarding it).
After that we were RR diesel free for quite some time. The P38 was available in Europe with a BMW 2.5 litre inline 6 diesel, but it was not sold here (there might be one or two around).
It was the third body shape RR (L322) that changed the diesel scene. Once again a BMW engine was fitted, but of 3 litres capacity. It is an excellent engine that returns very good economy.
More recently there has been a 3.6 litre V8 diesel fitted to the same shape Range Rover. The current one is 4.4 litres.
The RR Sport was also fitted with a diesel engine. TDV6 of 2.7 litres and TDV8 of 3.6 litres. Now 4.4 litres.
As far as reliability, it is hard to say. Given that the above models are available secondhand and new, with prices varying between "give away" to well over $150 000, it is a bit hard to make recommendations without knowing your budget!
