    old RR and KMS

Hi, As the name suggests I am a newbie to RRs. I was wanting to buy an old RR but am worried about all the kms(250+) on the clock with them. RR will be a 2nd car and mainly used for runabout purpose and some beach driving. I would really appreciate any advise on things i need to watch out for or specific models i should head toward. Open to thoughts/suggestions.

Not sure you are going to find an RRC with much less than 250Kms on it.

Distance travelled is a very poor indicator of condition for a vehicle like a RRC. Factors that age a RRC: Has it been garaged most of its life, has it been meticulously maintained, has it been used for towing or 4WD tracks much of its life, what area did it live in, what was its usage pattern, country trips or commuting, how meticulous was the maintenance, what range of repairs has been carried out. A few years ago a friend of mine wanted a LSE, there was a choice of a 200K vehicle and a 400K vehicle. The 400K vehicle had all major assemblies reconditioned but had a range of niggling issues. The 200K one was dead original but likely had incipient faults in things like air suspension and cooling systems. Also the 400K one was a fraction of the price of the 200K one. He ended up with the 400K one and enjoys the challenges of keeping an old but fantastic vehicle on the road.

Welcome to the crazy side of old car ownership RRnewbie.

By old I guess you mean the first RR shape Classic models aka up to and including 1994.
As per Pop they are stacking on the kays now and getting old. Check everything....very carefully......and preferably by another Classic enthusiast or similar motivated workshop.

As for what to watch out for. The biggie for me would be if it has been overheated. The RR Classic V8 engines do not tolerate any overheating with such an event almost certainly leading to an expensive top end overhaul. Any Classic for sale sporting a new radiator etc without a corresponding engine overhaul would have my warning bells clanging.

When you find a good Classic, it will likely take some time, I'd suggest having the radiator removed and rodded plus replacing the viscous cooling fan hub. A new water pump might be a good idea as well. I'd class this cooling system refurbishment simply as routine maintenance rather than unexpected repairs.

.....and......start putting some money aside for fuel purchases.....you're going to need it.

    Good luck.
