They are an US brand, actually. I have no experience whatsoever with any of their products, but from what I have seen and heard their products are as reliable as any of their major competitors. Some models were even factory fitted items on Land Rover vehicles (available as an option).
Your winch looks a good deal. I'd go for it.

I have seen plenty of the planetry drive units here fitted to tilt trays.

This was a Land Rover Special Vehicles build for "Southern Electricity" in UK and the Superwinch was factory fitted. According to the Land Rover's computer records there is still an outstanding recall on something to do with the winch. (Will have to enquire with my contact again.)

Looking at the site it appears to be a worm drive unit, so I'd imagine would winch all day at a constant speed and would be a capacity from 10,000 to 14,000 lbs. Wish I took a closer look at the capacity on the ID plate.

Diana, the winch's "Capacity" is governed by the SWL/WLL of the cable fitted to the winch, Regards Frank.

When I looked at the site listed by Bobslandies they showed three winches with the same general design as the one I've been offered, 10,000; 12,000 and 14,000lbs. Are you saying that the only difference is the cable wound onto the drum?

PS, everyone says it's a good winch and Justin C says it's a $3.5K kit new, but I've still got no idea what the secondhand price is. (I bought a SIII ex army Bamford for a few hundred and a LT95 Thomas for $650 and this is a lot more)

Many, Many apologies Diana, I have found the ad about the PTO Hydraulic winches to suit LT230 etc, it was a Milemarker 12,000lb, not a Superwinch. They retail in UK for 2155 incl VAT, so about $3200aud it is on Page 149 of Sept 2011 LRM, First Four advert.

Sorry I was relying on my dodgy old memory.

I would just use your judgement and make them an honest appraisal as to its used value, as you can imagine they are virtually impossible to test in dissassembled conditioned, and hydraulic pumps are very $$$ to overhaul.

Diana, the ratings of 10Klbs., 12Klbs., 14Klbs. are possibly rated by the manufacturer, but unless the ratings have SWL or WLL stamped on them then they could mean anything from the Guaranteed Breaking Strain (GBS) of the recommended wire rope cable or the actual load at which the winch will stop working.
It would pay to find out from the manufacturer what these numbers mean.
In any case it would be safer to go by the size and construction of the cable supplied, you could ring a cable supplier and ask for instance what is the SWL/WLL or the GBS of say 12mm 7 strand IWRC winch cable, if they give you a figure of say 10000lbs GBS then that rope would have a SWL of 2000lbs (i.e. SWL = GBS divided by 5 (Safety Factor) SF.
I would imagine the actual pulling power of the winch would be more than adequate, so if you go by the size of the rope to work out your SWL you should have no problems, as long as you work to the SWL and NOT the GBS like most in the 4WD game do, Regards Frank.
