When to replace your snatch strap

Is there a used by date for a hardy used well looked after snatch strap.....

Been thinking about my upcoming trip to fraser.....and thought about helping others who are stuck, touch wood I haven't been stuck on any of the islands around SEQ.

Most of the time with a bit of education (lower tyre pressures) I haven't need to drag out the snatch strap.

Than it dawned on me that my snatch strap must be around 20 years old, can only remember using it 2 maybe 3 times. It been kept in a canvass bag it's whole life while I have dragged it all over the country.

Given how busy fraser is these days I reckon there is a fair chance somebody may need a hand.

So I retired my old Opposite Lock strap and replaced it with and ARB model. I reckon it owes me nothing.

Well mine is a Warn which is 30 years old and I will use it. Mine has been used a bit but kept out of the sun and washed after each use. Besides the towee should supply the snatch strap.

Although they do make a mess if they break.

I have seen one stove in the tailgate of an RRC when the other end broke, but that was with a stupid try at debogging.

Mine is a couple of years old but still in the plastic it came with as I haven't had to use it as of yet.
I have had the opportunity to use it but have used the winch instead as I figure that by using the winch I have more control and the likelihood of damaging my truck or who I am recovering is lessened.
For Me a snatch strap would be my Last resort

I have an old black rat strap that has seen many years of service & abuse .
I have a new one now , but the old one remains as a tow rope or any odd duties that may take the shine off the new one .
I think if they are used sensibly they will give long service .

I always carry two - old & new.
When I come across someone who is stuck & hasn't got any recovery gear I offer them the used one, usually for about $50. This helps finance a replacement & makes them realise that they shouldn't go 4WD'ing without their own basic recovery gear.
I did this on the inaugural XBG Glenreagh Trip when some young blokes in Toyotas were having trouble getting off the beach at Yaringar NP.
