    Winch woes

    My fabulous winch died, just when I needed it. The relay **** itself. The second one to go. I took the control box apart and tried to disassemble the relay, but two of the screws were so tight they would not shift. I have bought a new relay, at about a third the cost of the a new control box. The relay is rated for 500A, the winch will draw 280A max, so a nice margin. About a year or so ago I took the winch apart and cleaned and re greased it, no sign of water entry. I think the relay may have got stuck through lack of use.

    It's good practice to run them out periodically, to move the bits about, to run the rope out in case it has crossed over itself, etc. Far better to come across problems at home when they're easier to deal with. Ask me how I know...

    There are s few vids about making your own relay box. Dunno which winch you have, Julian, but a lot of the cheaper ones really skimp in that department.

    This is a FYI only. Could be better.

    winches are the same as the CDL in the D2, If you don't use it you loose it
    A good habit to get into is to run out 15-20m of rope and wind it back on at least once a month and service the winch at least annually.
    There is Nothing worse than the winch giving up the ghost when you Really need it.

    My 5 year old el cheapo Domin8tor 12000 lb winch is still as good as when I first got it and it has done heaps of work, I put this down to maintainance.

    The solenoid will go into the existing Domin8r control box, it should fit. And yes, use it or lose it. A once a month run in and run out.

    Some years ago I was out with my son, D1 and D2. We both got bogged biblically in that black mud that smells like ****. I'd just got the D2 and it was untampered with apart from the chip and the CDL levers. His had deep reduction low ratio, a MaxiDrive rear locker and a Warn. He'd never used the Warn. Turned out the previous guy probably hadn't either, as it was completely useless. The fancy gears were no help either.

    Good thing I had a chainsaw. About five hours of using a half empty bottle jack and sawn off rounds off a fallen tree to get one out.

    Never again. No point having the bloody thing. My D1 ( actually the same one ) has a Domin8tor that I check often even while it's parked up. The OKA has a Tigerz11, ditto. Sure, it'd be nice to have the $$$ for a Runva, but those need maintenance as well.

    Regardless of the make of your winch lack of use/maintainance WILL kill it.

    That was pretty much the case with my son's Warn. He hadn't had the car long, but never thought about servicing the winch. That day changed that.

    I wound up giving that winch to another member on here. I wonder if he fixed it.
