Land Rover loves*bragging about the off-road prowess of its range. Now, it's showing off the capabilities of the*Range Rover Sport P400e*plug-in hybrid. In the above video, the British marque sends the face-lifted Sport PHEV up China's Tianmen Mountain Road – known as the Dragon Road, one of the world's most challenging sections of tarmac – before climbing 999 steps to reach the Heaven's Gate rock arch. At the wheel was Le Mans class winner and JLR Formula E reserve, Ho-Pin Tung. The 11.3-kilometre Dragon Road features 99 turns, while the staircase stands at a steep 45 degrees. "This was the hardest Range Rover Sport challenge I’ve ever been involved with because, until we reached the top, we couldn’t categorically say we would succeed," said Phil Jones, expert at Land Rover Experience. "By making it to the summit, we’ve proven the phenomenal capability of the Range Rover Sport plug-in hybrid like never before – with a genuine world first." Powering the Range Rover Sport P400e is a 221kW 2.0-litre 'Ingenium' turbo petrol engine mated to an 85kW electric motor, making for combined outputs of 297kW and 640Nm.
