    eBay Roof Racks

    Hi all,
    Has anyone fitted these? Or have any thoughts on them?
    Can they be fitted if your 1/2 handy or is it best to get them professionally done?

    Thanks
    Dave.

    Hi,

    They are very easy to fit. Definitely doable if you are half handy. One tip if you do it is to make sure the threads in the nutserts in the roof channel are clean. I only realised this after I snapped one screw off! eBay Roof Racks Worth running a tap through them first.

    Now, to the rails themselves.

    I bought and fitted these but ended up changing them over to the factory rails, mainly because of the fit in the gutter channel. I was getting pine needles and occasional leaves in the gap and therefore the gutter channel- they hadn't caused a problem but I was worried that they would eventually.

    Having now fitted both, the copies are definitely not the same as the OEM LR parts. I had no issues with the strength of them but the differences I noted are:
    - paint finish on copies not as good as (powder?) coating or actually probably anodising...? on LR rails - they might flake and rust eventually;
    - fit in gutter is nowhere near as snug - the extrusion is smaller (narrower) I think and the rubber seals on the LR rails are shaped to seal;
    - rubber strip seal on the LR rails seems to be of a better quality;
    - general fit of the feet etc. is a little better.

    Not bad but not as good as the LR rails.

    I found too that you can save quite a bit off the RRP on the LR rails if you shop around.

    Hope that helps.

    David

    p.s. I did fit black rather than silver

    Do you mean these bolts in the rails? My originals were a torx bit bolt and one was stripped. Ended up drilling off the head the using a smaller bit to carefully drill out the old bolt. Then used tap to clean up the threads. Was surprising easy to drill out took maybe 5 mins to drill out and 5 mins to re tap holes. Can't help with bolts as they came with the front runner rack.

    Yeah it’s the torx bolt. I’ve bought the re tapping tool to do the other side and re do the side I’ve done I just need to get the No. 1 easy out which total tools were out of. ☹️
    I’ll attempt it tomoz!

    Oh bummer. Same as Russrobe I carefully drilled out the centre of the broken bolt. I was then able to grab it with long nose pliers and turn it out. Depends on where it snapped... Again, as Russrobe said it was pretty easy to drill out.
    Can’t recall the size off the top of my head but apart from the captive nut and washer it wasn’t anything special - M5(?) machine screw I think would work. Good luck.

    Anyway so I got onto the other side today and bought a tap thing and all went on without any problems. It’s amazing how easy the bolts went in once the threads were clean.
    This is what came out!!
