If it has been sitting for a while with old petrol in it,you were very lucky to even start it! the shelf life of the current type of rubbish that they sell as petrol has a shelf life of between 12 and 16 weeks depending on which brew it is,drain out and it will probably smell like paint thinners and be brown:( also clean the carby out or at least run fresh fuel into it if possible, this is a major problem with vintage vehicles now, and it has come to the attention of many Qld members that 10% Ethenol is hydroscopic (attracts water) and it then rusts vintage tanks out,let alone eating rubber components :(
