Potential S1 purchase. Advice requested.

As John has said, a good restored example is worth around the $10k mark. Have a look at the item on offer and work backwards from that target price. Remember that original engine/transmission/wheels and ancillaries etc. are all worth dollars to an avid collector, as is its History.
Try and work out an average restoration cost to get it to that visualised condition, (If you have to pay someone to do it - forget it as the labour alone will eat up more than you can ever hope to get back) add the cost of parts required, rust restoration, body parts etc, upholstery and all the fiddly bits and subtract that from the target $10k and you should have an idea what the existing product is worth. (and whether a restoration is really feasible!- not that that stops most S1 nutters:))

Another series 1 tragic..you'll be sorry .

I'd have a close look at the chassis and bulkhead first, these items are the backbone of the car and the rest of the car is relatively easy to repair. Look for rust in the chassis and bodged chassis repairs after a prang , it's very common. Look for rust in the bulkhead , they always go under the two reinforcing plates , one where the steering box bolts to and its mate on the passenger side . Water gets under the plates and they rusts out causing the steering box to wobble . Mike

Thanks Ian, I think you are reading Scallops out of context.

I was not sure that the pic Mick first posted was the one he is talking about. So at first thought it might be a later S1. The offer of doors was a sincere (yet obviously misplaced) encouragement. I ended up with them because .....ok long story....not important now.
I realise now they are no good for Mick, whatsmore his has doors (as I said I misread his post). I appreciate many here (yourself included) have a vast wealth of knowledge on these classics.

Yes the doors are useless for an 80" , Scallops was just politely reminding me of that.
Anyway I am sure Mick (I know him fairly well, he gave me great advice when I was buying my 101) is smart enough to measure the value of info from a fellow, over enthusiastic, Land Rover tragic.

Anyway enough of a thread drift....back to the 80



P.S. Anyone need some 1956 S1 doors, free to good home, glass but no perspex...bonnet too.:D

I've found Scallops' threads and posts informative and helpful. I didn't read any negative stuff in what he posted and I'm sure he didn't mean any.

I'm getting the impression a fair price would be sub $1k.
Things to look our for are rust in the chassis and firewall.
