Another series 1

Finally got my new hoops bent up and ready to install. I used heavy wall inch gall water pipe . They engineers took a bit of time to get that constant curve across the top and then the 90 deg wide radius bend while keeping the width exact. After the hoops are welded up its off to the canvas man. Then fit that overdrive. I took Borumbah into Southern Landrover this morning while we were dropping off the Defender for some warranty work. She attracted quite a bit of attention the service manager didn't know I was with the wife dropping off the Defender and asked if he could help me. " Yes" I said " "I have this Landrover here its only 55 years old and its burning oil can you fix it on warranty " . You should have seen the look on his face " Sir ,they all use a little oil, I am sure the warranty period has expired some time ago " LOL:)

Hoops on but a bit more work to finish off very happy with the result nice and straight . And. Bonus I got to drive the 48 today what a sweet little ride this is .

Its around 36 deg today and we took Borumbah down the beach for us to have a swim. Coming home after midday the dreaded hot day fuel blues started. The Pump even my u-beaut electronic replica started to cavitate and make that sucking but nothings pumping noise. Once we started moving again it was ok but I am think of placing a pusher pump close to the tank to overcome this on hot days. Unleaded fuel doesn't like to pump when it gets hot. Up in Nullagine a few weeks back if you wanted unleaded you could only get it from the garage late afternoon when it cooled down. The super fuel must have pumped much easier otherwise there would have been lots of Landys stuck in the Sahara.

You don't have an air leak in the line somewhere?

I remember reading in some of Len Beadel's books that he would often face problems with fuel vaporising in the lines while surveying some of the central roads in the 50's and 60's(?). He would solve by taking several mouthfuls of water and spitting it out as a stream directed onto the fuel lines. This would happen to him frequently. So how about testing if the same resolves your issue and if it does the simply rig up a windscreen washer bottle and motor to direct water onto the fuel pump and lines?
Otherwise maybe a Dakar trick of wrapping all the lines in insulation foil or the other of blowing into the breather pipe to pressurise the fuel tank. (I think the latter is to stop fuel actually boiling in the tank, so maybe not applicable for your issue).

I ripped up some old towel, then wrapped the strips around the fuel line and kept them wet.
That worked well until I got time to fix the bonnet hinges with a sledge hammer to straighten them out. :twisted:
By doing that, created a bigger gap between the mudguard and the bonnet to let the hot air out.

The Landrover Mob did a trip to Landor Races a few weeks back and all of them experienced fuel vaporisation problems same as what I had Sunday and again today briefly. Old mate Graeme has now insulated his lines on the 48 with soft foam tube. I will look at putting another pump same as the transfer pump I used in the long range tank fitment close to the bottom of the main tank. My current transfer pump refills my main tank from the top similar to what Jaybo and I fitted to our new 90's. We pulled apart the Fairey o/drive today and its a mess needs new lay gear and output gear axs well as all the bearings. I got ripped off a bit with that one on Ebay but when finished it will have cost me around $1400. I got most of the bearings here in Perth and the rest is coming from Craddocks all $380 ponds worth:o. Still when done it will be good as new. My head gasket and bits have arrived once iu pull the head off I will see if it needs new valves ,guides and seats or just a clean up and reseat.
New 80 channel radio fitted to the Defender as well today very busy.
