The original was the Aeroparts Capstan . This had the mounting plate turned down at the front cross member.
107 wagons and some 86",s came with welded in tubes in the front cross member to suit these winches

The Fairey came later, designed for the 2 1/4 engine and has the mounting plate turned up at the front cross member. Also has a different drive and roller setup. Because the plate turns up the mounting rivnuts are in a different place to the Aeroparts.

I should point out that the early Aeroparts had a alloy base plate that was rounded back and front. These are hard to find. Later and the more common one has the alloy base plate cut flat back and front next to the radiator support panel and the bumper.

There are also three baseplates for Aeroparts winches. The cut off later winch body was likely introduced with the 88/109 Series 1 as the front crossmember was moved forward about an inch and some baseplates are shorter.

    If you want brackets:

Well Mike, Borumbah should have the Aeroparts capstan with the flat sided alloy base and the steel base plate that measures 310mm approx from front crossmember to just over centre of the bumper.
    The 80" & 86" steel plate measures 340mm approx.

Also need the brackets in Bobs link (and deep pockets full of money)

The MAP is later, like the Fairey.

    Hi Keith,

Is this it or can I make it work? It has a steel base plate as in the pic attached earlier in this thread. I have been offered a fair lead to use as a plug for a mould but I have to give it back.

Years ago Diana had some parts made for people who owned winches; I made the aluminium casting shown in one of 1950landy's photos for her.

At Wayne's request I made some patterns for the aluminium parts that support the fairlead-roller - incidentally an excellent job done by 1950landy on his steel copies - unfortunately when I cast them there was too much porosity in the metal The solution is to make a new furnace so that I can use my graphite crucible, but too many other jobs got in the way.

Anyway; be aware that I can make castings if someone is desperate for them, but I will need to clear an immobile S3 out of the foundry before I can do that,

    Cheers Charlie
I wish you hadn't mentioned this, I still have nightmares, and still haven't been paid for kits I delivered to some people, all in all not a very happy experience. But Charlie's blanks were good price and worked well.

The fellow who welded up the engine brackets, still has the jig and has just retired so may be interested in small batches once his new home and workshop is set-up. I can send him the CAD drawings of the brackets for laser cutting.

It is possible to modify the 2 1/4 engine dog clutch and use the 2 1/4 alloy bearing block on the S1 engine brackets. You have to drill one other hole on the cross bracket to mount the 2 1/4bearing block. You also have to slot the front of the harmonic balancer and have a special stepped bolt to hold the engine side of the dog clutch onto the S1 engine.

I'm not in the least interested in going through the drama of it again!

Thats not it but it can be made to work.
The Aeroparts steel plate is bent down at the back.
Yours , what I think I see from the photo bends up so is similar to the later Fairey. I think I remember something said once that MAP and Fairey were in cahoots sometime ago.

Mayflower Automotive Products, were bought out by Fairey so later MAP products were branded Fairey.

(Fairey, the company that built the planes that fired the torpedo, that crippled the steering that sunk the Bismark!)
