I have two 86" Land Rovers that were both built in the 1956 model year. The first (177600084) has the horn located on the front cross member and the later one (177601341) has the horn mounted underneath the bonnet on the passenger side.
I suspect the change in horn location may have occurred when the front radiator grille changed from aluminium to steel, which is what happened towards the end of 86" production.
We had a pet bird when we were kids that used to imitate that S1 horn :oQuote:

I think you have the answer there. The second 86" chassis I cant read the number but they would stop putting the hole in the plate when they moved the horn to the bonnet.Quote:

My '56 has the steel front panel, horn under the bonnet but a tapped hole in the chassis for a horn mounting.
The chassis is also body coloured which I'm told is categorically incorrect for 1956.
Did CKD lead to some strange combinations by using what was available ?

Body coloured chassis were supposedly only on 54 models, is your chassis the original? Maybe your chassis is from a 54 which would explain the hole for the mounting of the horn on the front crossmember.
However I think you ask a valid question in that there are some strange CKD combinations out there.
The early chassis' were kit form on CKD models to Australia but I'm not sure when this stopped
I know someone who worked at Regent Motors who welded the crossmembers to the chassis side rails. Would this mean that the chassis was painted in Australia or did they come in painted and they just touched up the weld areas ?

my 55 86 its where the steering relay would be on a lhd car {plate welded over relay hole with threaded hole in it
i guess it depends on what horn is used as the larger trumphet type horn wouldent fit where the clear hooter one dose.

ps i recon the horns in front of the grill are far more succeptable to weather damage perhaps thats a reason to move them..just a thought
I always thought that the horns should go in front of the grill. Here's how we mount them in Texas...
