Dual oil & water capillary gauges

I'm in the process of putting a 300Tdi into my 86".

The current gauge on the dash is the original type (I think), it has ammeter, petrol gauge and a single light in the lower 'gauge space' (oil pressure?).

I would like to install a period looking oil pressure and temp gauge as I believe the correct on would be the dual Jaeger capillary type.

I'm fairly confident the oil tube could be made to tee into where the oil pressure switch currently sits above the oil filter (I may need to make a piece to get the treads to match).

But, where would the water capillary fit? From memory the thermostat housing won't be big enough / allow for a drill and a tap to take the capillary. My other thought was to make an adapter / connector that would fit in the top radiator hose. I need to do something here anyway to accommodate a temp switch for the electric fan. I was thinking perhaps an ally block tapped to accommodate the temp switch and then another hole in the part to screw the capillary into.

My other thought was to remove the ammeter from my original gauge and replace with a temp gauge & voltage stabilizer from (I THINK) a IIa. Then simply just retain the oil pressure light. Not sure I like discarding the ammeter though.

Any thoughts or words I wisdom?

    Thx
    Jon

The light in the bottom of the left gauge unit is the main beam indicator. The oil pressure light is in the centre of the dash unit, above the ignition/headlight switch. The original Smiths 2" combined oil pressure and temperature gauge is still available new.

Like this one, that I have just had refurbished by Lionel Otto's in Brisbane

The temperature gauge bulb is drilled n tapped into the thermostat housing, and connected by a 3/8'BSP connector, hope that is of some help.
As stated they are available new, but not made by Jaegar, best bet would be to try and find one out of a S2A ex army Land Rover, cheers Dennis

    Hi Dennis,
Yes, thats the very gauge I was thinking of.

Could you measure the length of the water bulb for me please, the bit that actually lives in the S1 thermostat housing? Im thinking that I could maybe screw it into a custom ally block in the 300Tdi top radiator hose rather than the much smaller 300tdi thermostat housing.

    Cheers

Measuring the engine temperature via the top radiator hose only works when the water is flowing. When the thermostat is closed you will get a wrong reading. If the pump were to fail you would get a wrong reading. Better to measure somewhere on the head.

Good point Aaron, thanks. Time to have another look at the engine and a head scratch!!

    Thx

How do you expect the temperature gauge to work if you run out of watet? If it is in the head, it will still work with no water, alerting you to the fact. I have learnt this from experience.

Dual oil & water capillary gauges

These gauges are available brand new from the LRSOC in England. They are the original part - part #233480. They are 100 pounds, and a full fitting kit is 45 pounds. The kit allows the retention of the oil pressure light via a banjo fitting.

The fitting kit is designed so the water temp bulb plumbs into the thermostat housing (or the head). It definitely fits the thermostat housing, and works well. It's also where they were originally placed.

I have one on my vehicle, following a full engine (and virtually everything else!) rebuild. Mine is even mounted in an original fitting housing for the vehicle, to the RHS of the instrument panel.

I can take some pictures of the plumbing and gauge mount on the dash and post later if it would help.

The bulb length is 1 7/8" in length from the flange, I found out today that I need to make a longer adaptor, as that length of the bulb fouls the thermostat damn &^%$#, I don't have any 3/4" hex brass, only have 1" hex, so I guess I will be making it from that, cheers Dennis
