As others have mentioned, vehicles assembled outside the UK may have their chassis number in a different location to those assembled in the UK.
- Australian PMC assembled vehicles have the chassis number stamped on the LHS rear spring (shackle) bracket.
- South African assembled vehicles have the chassis number stamped on the LHS front spring hanger bracket.
Yes they do need to see the chassis, In Australia the vehicle identity is the number stamped into the vehicle frame or body in a monococque. The ID plate is only a secondary identity. Not sufficient for vehicle identity as it can be removed and placed onto another vehicle.Quote:

I had issues some years ago with a vehicle that had the chassis no on a brass plate riveted to the chassis. ACT inspector wanted it stamped on chassis.
I said I'd do some more work and find where it was stamped into chassis.
Went home and stamped chassis ... Just 'we could not find it earlier'
Rego inspector was happy and none the wiser!
May be worth changing inspector as there are some who are not confident with earlier vehicles, so inclined to accept whatever you say!
