The restoration of Wombat

Hi people

It is me, I am the one who has accepted the challenge of Cracker's (now my) 107 inch. When I begin work on it (probably in Spring), I am sure that I will become active and will regularly consult the forum for advice. Until then I will be busy building a shed to house the restoration and then organising all the parts.

The Wombat joins the 109 inch ute I bought last September to restore. That one is complete, rolling and engine runs, I even drove it around the farmer's paddock and on to the car trailer. But the 109 will have to wait - it makes abundant sense to have a crack at the 107 first.

Ahh, he's outed himself. Going to admit to the giant black beetles in the back shed? :twisted:

Happy to admit that I also have a 1963 VW Beetle tucked away too. But as I explained Crackers, it requires an engine and a 1200cc won't do, it formerly had 2110cc's on tap. Once you've had that you never go back.

Now back on to Land Rovers, is there a good thread somewhere on the forum that spells out the steps/process of restoring diff/axles? I want to take them back to bare metal, prime and paint. Obviously need to assess the internals etc.

I'm up for a new "shed" too. Are you putting up a proper one or are you going bush?

I have the shed (5.45m x 4.2m) I have got council approval - so it is a proper shed . I just need to erect it, paint the exterior, pour a cement floor, then cover the floor with an epoxy coating.

Don't forget three times as many double power points as you think you'll need, fluoro lights and lots and lots of shelving (you saw how mine filled up).

I still reckon a pit is a good move. Had one when I converted the MGB GT to RHD - that was pretty much a full restoration without having to do body work - the pit was amazingly useful. My pit was a dirty great big hole that they lowered a chip board coffin into, then back filled with concrete. Worked a treat and sooooo useful.

A bloke I used to know kept a 20l drum in his pit and let his oil changes just pour down into it. This was motorbikes so it took quite a few changes to fill it, and fill it he did, right to the brim. That's when he realised he was going to get the thing out of there... without spilling oil everywhere.

Dismally. People expect me to actually pay for the things. :mad:
My biggest problem is that I don't live in Sydney or Melbourne.

Add to that, my money's being siphoned by school holidays and public holidays (don't work? no pay) Now the dog's got his paw up for medical expenses -advanced heart disease, not sure how long we'll have him but he's on the home straight. Still happy in himself but you can see the end coming and with medication at $5 a day... :eek:

Anyways, this is Andrew's thread now, unless he starts his own. I'm just an enthusiastic heckler.

A pit isn't on the agenda. Making some platforms between the roof trusses for storage is. As you saw Crackers, Hugo will get involved so the shed needs to be 4 year old proof and the parts unavailable to little hands! Besides I need a clear workspace, clear walls etc I only want to see the parts that are being worked on, otherwise I can't think straight.

After this little flurry of posts I'll disappear and build my shed, and probably resurface on the forum in spring with shed built and possibly a new thread when the hard graft on the 107 begins. We'll see.
