I went & picked up my repaired Oil / Temp gauge this morning can't wait to find the time to fit it. 20180822_114145.jpg20180822_114214.jpg I still need to sort out an external bulb holder to light it up .

Found some time today to fit the combined oil pressure / tempurature gauge . I first needed to make a new plate for the gauge as the last one the hole was slightly too big & the gauge rim kept going into the hole on one side. Then it was off to the pipe fitting shop to get a fitting for the thermostat housing . Then it was all plane sailing , a couple of coils in the capillary tube to stop vibration & a couple of pipe saddles to hold it neat along the inner guard & all done. I left her idling for around 15minuts & the temp gauge was just starting to move , ( she has always been a cold frog) will run for two days running the pump off the PTO & never get hot.

So she is all ready for All British Day in a couple of weeks time.

Back then there was no AULRO to ask for help & not many restoration books on S1 Land Rover's . I was told to contact Anthony Maeder who was in Melbourne at the time which I did & received a very helpful back from him ( I still get that letter out some times to read it) I also joined the Rover Car Club Qld.
Over the last 29 years I have realised there are things I did not do correct that needs correcting & I have not had to carry out any major repair work.

In the last 6 months I have started to have a few electrical issues , a couple of oil leaks around the gear box & I know the brakes will need going through ( I think after 26 years the cylinders will need re kitting ) there is also an oil leak into the L/H rear brake drum. The paint is starting to get a lot of chips & is starting to look like camouflage.

Every time I read Dinty's restoration I think I have to do some thing with Landy before I can't do it. ( I blame Dinty for this ) ( Don't really blame him but his restoration sure helped to make my decision )

I had a nother rover Car Club member ring me the othr day saying he had had the sump & oil pump off his 48 S1 & he had turned the distributer drive shaft & could not understand the correct position for the Dist drive shaft. He thought that my vehicle was still pulled apart & was wanting to come & take a photo of the top of the shaft while the distributer was out. Seeing as my 80" is all back together I said that was OK I would set it up on no1 & remove the diatributer when he came & explain how to set it up. He came , he went & I decided to check the distributer while it was out only to find the vacuum advance not working . I rang Kev Baker in Melbourne to send me a new one last Monday & it arrived this Thursday.
After dismantling the distributer I found the thread on the vacuum unit had seized in the Vernier adjusting sleeve so I gave it a good spray with CRC & left it to soak for a couple of days. This morning it had freed up & I was able to screw the vacuum unit off. I reassembled the distributer adding sowing machine oil to all the lube wicks , gave the points a rub with wet & dry & reset the points gap. After refitting the distributer I turned on the key & pushed the starter button , the motor had not been started for about 6 months but still started on 1/2 aa turn & that was without any choke or accelerator. No wonder my brother always says he can't believe it starts so easy.
So she is already to take to the Samford Show next weekend besides a quick wash.

It has been awhile , my last post here was July 2019. From September 2019 until January 2021 Landy was stuck in the back of the garage being used as storage when I had the opportunity to be able to drive the 1st Land Rover engineer " Arthur Goddard" from his retirement village to the venue were family & friends had gathered to celebrate his 100th birthday. !st job was to see if she would start , found battery had no charge, I keep the battery on a solar charger but light was not flashing on the charger, WHY , what I found was when the guys had installed the pool solar heater on the roof they mounted it over the charger panel. I tried charging the battery with no result so new battery required .
Now found no fuel getting to carby , quick check under the seat fuel level below pickup. I had been taking fuel out to fill the mower to use it so it would not go off.
After new fuel she started on 2nd turn but there was fuel coming out the new flexible fuel hose from the pump to carby. The hose that came with the fuel line kit I had bought 3 years ago was not suited to unleaded . I made up fuel hose to be replaced when I sauced a unleaded one.
The next problem was the clutch had stuck on the flywheel , so forced into 2nd gear with on foot on clutch & the other on the brake with motor running & it released.
I took her for a short run up & down the street to check the brakes & everything working.

So on the 31st of January The driver who was born January 1950 headed off to the other side of Brisbane in a Land Rover that started life in January 1950 to pick up a gentleman who was born on the 31st of January.
