Except the later 2L spread bore engines which have the number stamped at the back as well as at the front.

I have searched everywhere but have had no success in locating an engine number at the front of the engine, unless I am looking in the wrong place.
I definitely have my oil filter under the intake manifold and it does appear to be the cartridge style.
I definitely have the exhaust coming from the centre of the manifold.
So does this add up to a 2 litre spread bore motor?

The spread bore the manifold outlet is off set. You may have to pull the head off to identify it.[bigsad]
Hi all, thanks for all the great suggestions in helping me identify my motor, however I am still very confused so reach out for help once more.
1950 Landy suggested that "Exhaust manifolds 48 to 53 the out let comes out the center of the manifold & 54 to 58 it is off set to the rear of the manifold. So it looks like yours is a early 2L probably correct engine for the vehicle". This suggests that I have a 2litre siamese bore motor. Terrific I thought!
Then Diana (Lotz-A-Landies) was definite in her suggestions that if my motor had its oil filter under the intake manifold (which it does) then it had to be later 2L spread bore motor.
As both these people seem very knowledgeable I am confused because I have both a central outlet exhaust and an oil filter under the inlet manifold.
As I am seeking clarification so I can start to order new head gaskets, are there any other clues that might point me in the right direction? One person suggested that I remove the head to see, but that emends I cannot \order a new gaskets until that is done, meaning my car is off the road for some time.
Are there any other indicators that might help me clarify which motor I actually have?

Forget about manifolds, exhaust pipes, heads, rocker covers etc. , they're all interchangeable. If the oil filter is under the INLET manifold it's a Spread bore. The diameter of the core plug at the BACK of the engine, on a Siamese is about 1 -1/8" , on a Spread bore about 1 -7/8". Clearly visible in my picture, post #11.

Jeff, here's a pic or two of my 53 engine which may help. Note that the number is stamped vertically at the very front of the machined face for the exhaust manifold. This engine is the sweetest thing despite its shabby appearance. Once it's warmed up its low-down torque is astonishing. I've also included a more general shot of the engine, which is pretty correct for a 1953 Siamese bore, apart from the coil, and the overhauled (and repainted) vacuum advance diaphragm. Your distributor (Lucas DM2) looks correct for a spreadbore engine.

If someone decked the exhaust manifold face when they replaced core plugs it can remove the engine number.
Just one point engine numbers in S in au match the sequence for UK Home not the Export or CKD sequences. Same as axle and gearbox numbers
