    Engine number help please

I have read a lot of confusing information regarding Series 1 engine numbers and as I plan to start an engine restoration program shortly, I thought I best check with the experts and I am just getting more confused.

I have what I believe to be very original 1953 Series 1 80".

My papers show a Chassis number of 36662031 and an engine number of N602166P, which matches the stamped number on the the block at the rear Left (exhaust) side. The chassis number checks out with internet chassis search tools, but I have read so much conflicting information about original engine numbers and where those numbers ae stamped, I am not even sure if this is there engine number or the block number.

Can someone tell me what this engine is in sufficient detail for me to order a new gasket set?

    Many thanks

That engine number looks to me like a number assigned by NSW police in the case that a valid engine number could not be found, but investigation did not show any funny business.

These numbers were prefixed by a letter designating the state (N,V,Q,S,W,T etc), and suffixed by the letter 'P'. I don't know whether the system is still in place, but I encountered it in 1971 in Victoria when I moved from Qld, and the engine number was unacceptable because it was only on a plate rivetted to the engine (Citroen ID), and again with the chassis number on my Landrover 2a when I moved it from Victoria to my farm in NSW in 1991 and the RTA could not find the number stamped on the chassis.

    Thanks John
in this particular case, the engine number stamping looks very factory, so I cannot see how the local police could do this. I've also attached a photo of my engine in case that is a help.

    Thanks for the help.

Police allocated and inspected the number the owner has responsibility to mark it. This system is still used in some stations they still have the allocation pads with numbers on. Usually now it is a number issued direct from transport department.. unsure if the prefix and ending P are still used..

In my case the registration authority gave me the name of a garage who had the stamps and would do it, and I had to bring it back to check that I had actually put the number on.

Series 1 engine numbers are stamped on the L/H side of the block but at the front . I will take a photo of the location tomorrow & post it up.

Yes, that is what I thought, but I don't have a S1 here to check, so thanks.

IMAG1311.jpgIMAG1310.jpg Bit hard to see but behind heater pipes I have painted the block silver. The number you have is stamped in same position but at the back of the block. Your engine no should start with the same 4 numbers as the chassis no. My chassis number & engine numbers start with 0610. Your engine is one of the 2L motors as it has the steel oil filler tube with breather cap & a breather cap on the top tappet cover.
All of the IOE engines had the number stamped at the front of the block were mine is including the Rover cars.
I have a sheet some were that shows were all the numbers are located ( engine , gear box & diff ) I will see if I can find it.

Exhaust manifolds 48 to 53 the out let comes out the center of the manifold & 54 to 58 it is off set to the rear of the manifold. So it looks like yours is a early 2L probably correct engine for the vehicle.
I would have a go at giving the front of the block a good wire brush & see if you can find any sign of the original number . I would say that when it was taken for rego mat some stage & nobody could find the number or knew were to look it was given a new number by transport department. The other thing is I know when i worked for BMC years ago if they supplied a new engine to a dealer under warranty there was no engine number stamped on the block & it was up to the dealer to transfer the number from the original block or have a new number allotted from the transport department.

There were replacement engines and blocks available as spares from the Rover parts chain. The dealers mechanic fitting a warranty replacement were supposed to stamp the original number in the new engine and destroy the old. This didn't always happen.
The number you have is a NSW Police number as John suggests.

You can partially identify the engine from fittings. If it has the oil filter just behind the LHS engine mount it is either a 1595cc or 1997cc siamese bore (correct for a 1953). If the oil filter is a paper canister type under the inlet manifold its a 1997cc spread bore from a later model. The alloy oil filler makes me think its 1595cc.
