Series 1 86/88 dash panels are, I think, identical to Series 2, and interchangeable with Series 2a up to suffix 'C' (1967), although there are slight differences in the holes. Series 2a suffix 'D'-'H' have substantial differences in the holes, most notably the combined switch cutout is replaced by separate light and ignition switches with smaller holes.
This is my 1971 2a dash for comparison.

p1 was feeling a bit tired so thought to do something small today. had removed the air vent controllers and wanted to clean them up, paint stripper and then steel disc on drill to clean up, this is the before shot
p2 then cleaning steering bracket and windscreen brackets, fiddly little buggers
p3 windscreen bracket fitted with my freshly painted bolts, looking good, both sides done
p4 then had a look at the fuel tank guard, what a mess!
p5 part way cleaning using anything i could including this drill for finer bits and the angle grinder with sanding disc on rest though they get ruined quickly due to the horrible black rubber glue (sound deadening) crap all over it making it so much harder to clean up
p6 under the tray then drew my attention, whilst the angle grinder was handy thought to tackle this lower part to clean up
p7 mid way point painting the tray, was going to paint it green but had more black paint handy so attacked with black paint
p8 fuel tank painted black as well, looks weird because its part dry part wet
p9 end product for today's work, underside of tray almost complete, don't mind the look of the black either
p1 - couldn't resist the urge to fit the fuel tank guard, so done for today
I think the fuel tank guard is supposed to be attatched to the fuel tank.

i did think about that though the guard is temp fitted. how should i secure the guard and the tank together, not sure what the original connection was, but would a strong silicone adhesive of sorts do the job like liquid nails? I cant think of anything else that could be used to secure the tank in its position.
They were originally soldered together. I think silicone would work - strength is not an issue because of the large area involved.

p1 bracket for brake or clutch fluid tank painted and installed
p2 bracket for firewall (thin long bolt) painted and temp installed, small jobs that need doing
p3 air vents painted and fitted, need to source the rubber yet and open/close mechanism not installed yet
p4 d/s rear cross member thought to replace but have decided to just keep as is, i know its not original but its close enough for me (outside pic)
p5 inside pic, needs a lot of grinding to get flat smooth again
p6 outside d/s mid way
p7 p/s side mid way, after using cutting grinder, then grinding disc and then a sandpaper disc all on the grinder
p8 stripping black paint away

p10 finally all stripped to bare metal
p11 painted with silver paint, needs more work but made it easier to see where i need some filler.
its not perfect nor original but its welded well and well secured, i do have other chassis work to do so taking a short cut here. i know its there and looks to me like a later model defender cross member its just missing the centre hole. need to use some minor bog for some of the imperfections and should be done. the other hole in the centre was for a trailer socket which i have removed.

before and after, this is one supporting panel out of three total for the underside of the rear tub. sprayed in silver. looks ok to me, ended up buying some cheap spray cans from SCA and will spray these panels as they are underneath and probably not seen that much anyway

worked on the rear tray (tub), man there is so much crap that has come off and so much on the floor, just have a look at these two compartments full of crap that i have had to scrape off with a screwdriver, seems to work the best. All other materials get clogged up quick and become useless.
also painted one more support brace (silver) for underneath and secured, just one more remaining which needs cleaning and riveting on.
also painted another section of the underside mat black so doing in small quantities seems to work for me. I like and need to see some paint each time i work on the vehicle to see me progressing the LR. Sadly way more scraping is still needed yet.
