Tiny bit excited

thx 1950landy but its already off and forgot to mark the locations for refitting but as temp fitted should it rotate as in turn the wheel side to side by hand or not? it seems too stiff to me. I imagine with nothing fitted to this arm it should rotate by hand easily which mine does not.

1. brand new water pump fitted, still waiting on the puller for the harm balancer to arrive

2. union joint for the brakes re fitted correct way up, installed it before incorrectly. finger tight at present.

If you look in your LR workshop manual it will tell you the correct orientation for the arms on the shaft. It will be stiff especially if it dose not have any oil in it . It will be quite stiff even with oil as the heavy spring in side is pushing the fibber bushes hard against the tapers. You will probably find once you fill it the oil will run out the bottom seal. BE CAREFUL If you are pulling it apart be very careful that spring has a lot of tension on it. Make sure you read the LR workshop manual before attempting to pull it apart & keep your face well clear .

1-2 oil pump before and after pics when painted
3-4 lower engine d/side before and after paint
5 spent few hours cleaning painting and installing bits n pieces to the block incl oil pump, engine mounts tightened and found all correct bolts, spark plug/leads, cleaned up distributor and bracket fitted, new gaskets fitted where required, side covers bolted up with gaskets etc
6 reminder to me to buy a new oil filter Z30

distributor and leads is on for protection and loosely fitted for now.
my exhaust manifold is ready for paint (heat paint) but one of the 'nuts' is no longer on the manifold, so thinking may weld a new nut or buy 2nd hand manifold so i can bolt up the manifold
so much done so much more to do. did more brake pipe work as well, figured out where all the piping goes, just need to clean the little screws/brackets that secure to the chassis

1 supercheap auto was open today so grabbed my Z30 oil filter and fitted, another job ticked off the growing list

2 was not happy with all the silver in engine bay so took this firewall supports off and painted in black to offset against the too much silver, will fit tmrw when dry

3 had a look at the 9 tiny brake pipe supporting hardware incl screws which hold the brake pipe onto the chassis and decided to bath them in some hydrochloric acid i had in the house to hopefully clean them up. will see in the morning, they are soaking in the coke bottle...

1 firewall supports dried in black so fitted loosely till firewall goes in for alignment

2 this was after approx 1hr, think it worked a treat cleaning off the paint and oils, made a new batch and soaked overnight now, but that acid sticks

3 just looking at the brake master which is useless and has the three hole as opposed to the two hole, i think these are expensive and harder to get in the 3 hole, can i swap over to the two hole master. the only part i can use is the grommet cover perhaps which is in good clean condition

1 managed to buy some x4 bolts galvanised for the shocks, i know these are not the correct ones but will do for me, i didn't have 4 of the originals anyway and this was the best option for me. i may need to cut off any excess as they were a tiny bit longer then original (when i buy shocks)

2 strap brackets were looking a bit tired with some cheap black paint so re did in some newer spray paint (heat paint) for the manifold i bought earlier. looks much smarter. still need to purchase the straps as well.

acid cleaning is still progressing slowly but this maybe my last wash then quick paint and install for the brake pipes. still waiting on damn puller for harm bal so that i can finish off the front end and prep for engine install

1-2 manifold cleaned up a little, given some much needed heat black paint for manifolds etc, came up ok. just need to do some welding around the flange end for exhaust missing a 'nut' to bolt up the exhaust to

3 believe it or not but this has had some cleaning up on both prop and tail shafts, ripped off the rubber protective cover, UJ seem ok, needs another clean up before paint, will need the rubber covers once painted, they seem like they are identical front and rear shafts

1-2 harmonic puller arrived today so quickly i removed the harm balancer as seen in pic

3-4 this is the extent of the damage if i can repair i will have a go (good excuse to use my alum welding rods) or purchase replacement if i can find locally

5-6 prop and tail shafts cleaned up and painted

need to find my torch to heat up the timing cover and experiment with the alum rods and see how i go. still need to source some new bolts for the manifold as well. timing gear looks real healthy to me which was a bonus.

As I said easy to get off with the correct puller & you will find lots of jobs that you will be able to use it for. The fiber timing gear has been replaced with an aluminum on at some stage which is good for you. While you have got the cover off you should check they have timed it corectly, seing you were having so much trouble with getting the distributor timing rite. You may pick up a 2nd hand cover from a engine reco shop. if not I am sure you will get one off Ebay or Gumtree.

1. guess what turned up today from the UK, starter button, does this connect from the starter and then onto the battery so when you depress it connects both starter and battery together

2-3 base plate for the springs, hard to find a replacement so thought i would have a go at drilling out the old bolt and welding new bolt in place, original bolt was stripped off. cut the end off and drilled a core for a replacement bolt to be welded

4. brake line clips painted and screwed into position holding brake lines, does the rear brake line run along the axle as opposed to the chassis like the front???

5. manifold sorted and both manifolds bolted into position, welded a bolt on the end of the flange for the manifold exhaust system to bolt up to. sorry forgot the pic

6. 1950landy this one is for you, is the correct timing you were speaking off, assume this is correct then???

7. engine mount is off a defender which is much larger then the original so needed a slight cut to make fit on three ends

8-10. can someone confirm what sensors these are, assume closest to the water pump is the water temp, one closest to the oil pump is the oil pressure, and then there is one on top of the head - do i need to worry about this one???
