Tiny bit excited

Late last night secured 4x LR wheels as replacement for the S1 as mentioned by others above. Was told they came with a defender but now realise they look to me to be Disco 1 wheels. Best thing they were free, just need to secure one other as a spare. Wasn't 100% sure it would fit but remembered seeing other series ones with disco wheels so grabbed them.

p1 nuts which came with the wheels but do not fit the series one, must be disco1 wheel nuts, could someone confirm please?

p2 4x wheels as found, was looking for swb series one wheels and came across these in good cond, just need a paint job

p3 my measurement of my S1 wheels measures 6' (not 5.5' for the swb as confirmed by the stamping on wheel), am i measuring from the correct location?

p4 disco wheels are 8', so two inch difference between the two sets of wheels ie disco vs series one

p5 disco wheel fitted up to see if it fits, which clearly it does, so happy with that

p6 disco inner wheel to chassis edge 6' clearance

p7 S1 inner wheel to chassis edge 7' clearance so one inch difference

not sure what size tyre was standard on these wheels, don't want anything too big so to not disturb the handling. what size would suit?

Yes they do look to be Disco wheels.

Giving yourself a wider wheel will be harder on the steering but give more grip on the road, but,, will also add to your fuel bill with more drag.

They're Series 1 Disco wheels alright. The nuts that came with them will be a metric size, whereas S1 is all imperial - Whitworth, BSF, etc.
Early RangeRover steel wheels will also fit, but only on the rear axle. At the front axle they interfere with the hub.
Measurement of rims is from inside to inside of where the bead of the tyre rests on the rim. You'll find your S1 rims measure 5.5" there. The difficulty with using Disco rims on a S1 is the increase in the turning circle - ie you can't turn the steering wheel very far before the tyre wall starts rubbing on the leaf spring. Try laying a S1 rim and a Disco rim on their side, outside up on a flat surface. Now measure the distance from the face that fits against the brake drum down to the flat surface. Compare the 2 measurements. The difference represents the difference in "offset".
Incidentally I'm running 205/80 R16's on my little wunnie, they're comfortable on both 5.5" and 6" rims. Trust this helps.

p1 here is my dash panel which i intend to use but just wanted to make sure its off a series one and not a later model ie s2. just painted it up, attached pic unpainted.

hear what your saying about the tyres will think through and decide, they are the best i have at the moment though!

That is off a Series II.... From memory the series one has a long, thin rectangular size - with smaller gauges...

Well I am now more confused than before (that isn't hard).. Hopefully one of the Series I guys can come along and answer your question.

Here is an example of a "Series I" dash board that I was thinking of - as you can see it's completely different to yours.

Perhaps it's from an earlier Series I?

Yes that is the 80" dash with the small gauges , the later S1's have the large instruments similar to the S2's.

so its a series one then, not bothered by the extra hole. yes the other looking dash is the 80', mine is a 86'. not sure what the difference though small maybe for the difference in S1 vs S2 dash. i think i will keep and use as is.

p1 returned my incorrect bolts quickly sanded and painted old bolts, did want silver colour but only had black paint left so used this instead, wasn't sure of the look but its not too bad me thinks. did not think i would be painting bolts but with these special bolts prob cheaper and easier then sourcing new.

p2 fitted d/side

p3 fitted p/side, i did buy a strap years ago but was very cheap and thinly made as a replacement for the diff strap, can you still purchase a thicker gauge strap these days similar to original would be nice or left as is. i could prob find my new strap somewhere but did not like the look and quality

p4 finally somemore paint on the air vents and dash panel waiting to dry

i did do the measurement of the two different wheels disco vs S1 face down to measure offset was approx 1' diff hence the rubbing of the disco wheel to the spring comment. now to purchase some more spring washers it never ends...
