I have fitted electric fans to a couple of vehicles without shrouds.

the secret is mounting the fan(s) on the radiator with about 1mm clearance between the radiator and the rim of the fan, yes 1mm.

there is no need for a shroud as the air being drawn or pushed stays inside the fan rim and passes efficiently through the fan itself.

I remember having to buy long small diameter bolts to pass through the radiator core fins and mudguard type washers to prevent crush on the fins.....all available from your nearest nuts and bolts store. Use nyloc or locknut each bolt to prevent it coming loose.

One vehicle was 202 Holden ute , the second was 2.7ltr Nissan Pathfinder Diesel , the third was D2 td5....I had a ford twin fan shrouded thingo , but preferred to set the td5 up as above

thanks ramblingboy42 - will try to fit the new one much closer to the radiator then before and with a more powerful fan should do the trick.

    1. wasn't expecting delivery today but came early - was due next week so with the sun out had to make a start. unboxing of the fuel tank kit

    2. clearly marked with good instructions - first needed to boil the kettle, then mix 1:1 with cleaning agent pour into tank and swirl around

    3. here it is fresh water washed and allowed to dry fully out in the sun. step 1 complete needs steps 2 (rust inhibitor) and step 3 (sealer), now just waiting for the tank to fully dry in the sun.

will attempt steps 2/3 on weekend if weather permits. pressure is on to get the tank fitted up asap, before the fan arrives so that I can finish the tank off and then begin on the fan fitment.

just miss not being able to drive up and down my driveway, still blown away it all works and drives.

    fuel tank completed

    1. on the weekend, got to the fuel tank and cleaned, then applied rust inhibitor and then the sealer. so now the wait is on, 90 odd hours for the sealer to cure, so cant pour fuel in until Thursday this week.

    2. this was the excess sealer that came out of the tank, rock hard

    3. this is a view of inside the tank with the sealer applied and waiting for it to cure.

    4. tank installed and secured, just waiting to pour the fuel in and see if it leaks anymore (shouldn't) gave it a good coating by moving the tank in all positions/rotations.

also fitted the gaskets which were missing last time, there was some evidence at the top of someone previously doing some repairs so my guess is it was leaking from the top side/s.

next job to fit the elec fan when it arrives so that i can get mobile again.

    electric fan

    1. been waiting for the electric fan to arrive and finally it did... first impressions very food quality, great brand, feels heavier and does actually spin with more flow output when tested

    2. here it is fitting in between the radiator and the front radiator support panel loosely in position, wired it up and works a treat, but need to work out some spacers, longer bolts to secure in a position as close to the radiator as suggested as possible allowing for some movement, will be bolted up to the front panel some how.

    3. here is the current space between the fan and the radiator but will close up the gap when fitting properly.

Hoping this should solve my heating problems at idle. still waiting to pour fuel in the tank and then do a test drive up and down the driveway.
